DESCRIPTION:Sunbridge Institute’s online Meet & Greets are designed for you to get to know us: our offerings and curricula; values and principles; resources and partnerships; setting and culture; and\, most importantly\, our people (program directors\, faculty\, and students/alums). \nThis spring’s event welcomes individuals interested in any of this summer’s low-residency Waldorf teacher education diploma programs (Early Childhood\, Elementary\, or High School) or our short-term certificate program (World Languages & Cultures). In order to apply credit for your weekend classes toward a WHSTE diploma in the future\, you must: \n\nAttend the entire weekend and complete all assignments\nApply to our High School program within three years of the last weekend you attended\n\nShould you eventually enroll\, the cost of your weekend attendance will be credited to your WHSTE tuition. \n  \nCost \n$250 per weekend\, including a $25 non-refundable registration fee. SUMMARY:Introduction to "Grounded in Practice" - Foundation Studies for the Modern Age
DESCRIPTION:This online workshop is an introductory experience for individuals interested in exploring Grounded in Practice\, a new\, experiential Waldorf Foundation Studies program designed for: \n\nAnyone interested in Waldorf education and teaching\nEducators new to the Waldorf movement\nWaldorf community members (admins\, staffers\, assistant & subject teachers\, etc.)\nIndividuals looking for a stronger foundation before entering Waldorf teacher training\nTeacher training applicants or students looking to fulfill program prerequisites or requirements\n\nAbout Grounded in Practice \nLaunched in 2025 by Rubeena Sandhu and Sarah Nelson of The New Adult Learning Institute\, Grounded in Practice connects anthroposophical tenets with practical application to the Waldorf classroom. Integrating Steiner’s anthroposophical principles for teachers\, Martyn Rawson’s Generative Principles\, and a picture of child development explored through the arts and teacher preparation practices\, Grounded in Practice is constructed so participants can immediately apply their program experience to any age classroom\, using newly-acquired imaginative and developmental methodologies to form the basis for their own planning\, teaching\, and assessment practices. The full yearlong Grounded in Practice program consists of an in-person weeklong retreat in the summer followed by twice-monthly online learning modules incorporating live sessions and interactive assignments that take place from September-May. \nOur introductory weekend affords participants to sample the full Grounded in Practice program by exploring its three main elements: spirituality\, experience\, and classroom pedagogy.  \nOur workshop begins on Friday evening with an introduction to Martyn Rawson’s generative principles and a phenomenological exploration of the spiritual aspects of being human. We will then further explore how these dimensions reveal themselves in lived experience and connect to child development and classroom practice. \nOn Saturday\, we will deepen this work through experiential and contemplative practices supporting developmental teaching strategies\, not as abstraction\, but as a living reality shaping both personal growth and pedagogy. Movement\, singing\, and speech will serve as practical models\, allowing us to experience firsthand how child development is nourished and enlivens the classroom. \nThe Generative Principles Applied in Grounded in Practice \n\nWaldorf education takes the spiritual dimension seriously\nSense of coherence is the basis for healthy learning & well-being\nThe quality of the teacher’s preparation influences the quality of learning\nStudents need to be ready to learn and they need time to learn\nLearning is a rhythmical process\nLearning processes are structured over time\nBlock teachings strengthens learning dispositions over time\nDirect experience is the basis for learning\nActivating the imagination through vivid pictorial descriptions and images is another powerful starting point for learning\nA phenomenological approach enables the organic growth of knowledge\nThe teaching must be artistic\nThe self-activity of the students is essential to the learning\nGood teaching and learning depends on the development of the senses\n\n  \nFor Waldorf teacher education students: According to AWSNA guidelines for teacher preparation requirements\, the full Grounded in Practice program fulfills 100 hours of Foundation Studies as required by some Waldorf teacher training institutes. Teacher training students should contact your teacher training institute to see how this may apply to you. \nWhile Sunbridge does not have a Foundation Studies prerequisite\, our Elementary Teacher Education program gladly accepts completion of the entire 10-month Grounded in Practice program for transfer credit or to fulfill supplemental hours. \n  \n  \nGrounded in Practice Directors/Facilitators \n \nSarah Nelson has been a Waldorf educator and advocate for over 27 years\, serving as a class teacher\, early childhood educator\, pedagogical administrator\, mentor\, and leader within the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA). Currently\, she works with various Waldorf schools while splitting her time between British Columbia and Maui\, HI. Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in adolescent and child psychology from UMass\, a master’s in education from Antioch New England\, and a Waldorf teaching certificate. \n \nRubeena Sandhu has been a Waldorf educator and school head for over 25 years. Rubeena’s experience as an adult educator includes serving as faculty member and director of the Grades program at The West Coast Institute for Studies in Anthroposophy and as an instructor in Sunbridge’s Elementary Teacher Education program. The Northwest/Pacific Region member of the AWSNA Leadership Council since 2018\, and secretary of the Anthroposophical Society in Canada\, Rubeena currently works as a certified New Adult Educator and school counselor\, helping to support students\, teachers\, administrators\, and parents.
