Read Summer Series 2023 details here. \nTaught remotely in real-time\, this course offers you an invaluable opportunity to focus entirely on your upcoming sixth grade school year in five days brimming with presentations\, discussions\, and practical activities. \nUnder the guidance of an experienced class teacher\, you’ll discover ways to enliven your teaching and learn how to approach the blocks so that they may meet the sixth grader in a meaningful and lively way. With the insights of anthroposophy\, gleaned through a look at child development focusing on your class’s age group\, you will get to know the sixth grade child in depth as they enter adolescence. \nAlong with time and space to consider and hone your skills in such practical matters as main lesson books\, block planning\, projects and activities\, and classroom management\, your course will include such key topics for sixth graders—and their teachers—as: \n\nThe gesture of the sixth grade\nTopics in language arts\, including poetry and research papers\nMulticultural approaches to world history and the introduction of the Asian empires\nTopics in math\, including business math and practice classes\nTopics in world history\, including Rome\, origins of Christianity and Islam\, and the Middle Ages\nTopics in geography\nIntroduction to physics\, astronomy\, and earth science / geology\nPlays\, projects\, community service\, and trips\nSixth grade quizzes and assessment\nParent work and colleagueship\n\nThese subjects will be supported by explorations in art\, music\, and movement\, giving you practical tools to take into your school year. \nIn addition to inspiration and guidance which will support your teaching throughout the year\, you’ll gain many invaluable opportunities for building connections among a community of parallel colleagues from across the country\, to carry with you into your teaching. \nGrade-specific resource materials useful for your year\, including poems\, songs\, stories\, and main lesson book ideas\, will be provided to you electronically. \nNOTE: This course is taught with the expectation that you have a foundational background in Waldorf education. \n  \nLead Instructor  \nLila Rubio is a member of the core faculty at The Waldorf School of Atlanta\, where she currently teaches grade six. A native of Puerto Rico\, Lila previously was a math tutor for Decatur (GA) High School and a calculus teaching assistant at Georgia Tech. She also spent many years in senior management in the business world before becoming a mother to two daughters\, both students at WSA. She has a Bachelor in Textile Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and an MBA with a finance concentration from Wake Forest University and received her Waldorf teaching certificate from the Rudolf Steiner Centre in Toronto. Lila loves to travel\, camp\, ride bikes\, cook \nYour course also includes sessions in art with Kelly Beekman\, music with Adam Petersen\, and movement and games with Charlie Orphanides. \n  \nSchedule \nThis course takes place July 16-21 in a synchronous online classroom. \nALL TIMES LISTED BELOW ARE EASTERN (NY) TIME ZONE \nSunday evening: 6:15 pm-6:30 pm: Log in for technical check-in and attendance. Your first session starts promptly at 6:30 with “The Gesture of the Sixth Grade\,” and ends at 8:15. New teachers especially are encouraged to remain for a Q&A with your lead instructor from 8:30-9:00. \nMonday-Thursday: Instruction takes place between 10 am and 5 pm (excluding breaks). We also encourage you to attend our elective music studio (5:15-6:15 Wednesday) and roundtable discussion with faculty (7:15-8:15 Thursday). \nFriday: Instruction and wrap-up takes place from 10-2:30 (excluding breaks). Previously\, she took a class from sixth-eighth grade at Green Meadow Waldorf School. A graduate of the College of William and Mary\, Rebecca discovered Waldorf education while studying Mayan archaeology at Tulane University\, from which she earned an MA in Anthropology. She also holds an MSEd in Waldorf elementary education from Sunbridge College. \nSummer Series 2022 participants had this to say about their experience with Rebecca: \n\nRebecca’s passion for teaching is the most inspiring thing… and that’s saying a lot! because content was great\nRebecca was wonderful! So experienced\, insightful and left time for comments and questions.\nRebecca’s recommendations were modern and deep. I will be using them throughout the year and they will help shape my year and make it easier.\nRebecca was open\, honest\, organized\, professional. She was able to cover a wide range of topics and stayed on track and on time. I appreciated her willingness to discuss any question or topic. She balanced the time well\, gave resources\, gave ideas\, but left space for us to figure things out on our own.\nRebecca offered wonderful insights and shared her experiences in an honest and authentic way \nThe guided discussions that allowed the expertise from so many educators to be available was broader and more insightful than any one person could be. SUMMARY:Collaborative Leadership: Personalized Strategies for Becoming a More Effective Member of Your Leadership Team
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for decision-makers—including administrators\, directors\, board and committee members\, and faculty chairs—working in Waldorf schools or other workplace settings. This course is taught remotely in real-time. Read Summer Series 2023 details here.  \n\nAre you consciously or unconsciously shaping your organizational and leadership culture? And do you have the skills necessary to recognize problems that might exist or arise within your workplace\, help your leadership team prioritize these issues\, and equip them (and yourself) with the tools to address them? \nIn this highly-useful course\, our focus is on the practical work of being a leader and decision-maker. Through a process imbued with the anthroposophical understanding of the human being\, and successfully applied in organizations from Waldorf schools to multi-million dollar nationals\, Collaborative Leadership will help you learn how to improve your effectiveness as a member of your leadership team. \nEach participant is asked to bring their own organizational question\, project\, or challenge. Using your real-life cases\, we will apply these four core models for collaborative leadership: \n\n\nThree main leadership tasks: Maintaining and creating identity / Creating space for healthy\, stable relationships / Assuring professional results\nDiagnostic and planning tools: How to look at an organization as a whole and understand the dynamics of intersecting segments\nHow to create processes toward healthy decision-making\nThe balance between power and trust\n\nYour course takeaway will be an individualized action plan for the question\, project\, or challenge you have brought with you\, along with an understanding of the necessary skill set with which to execute it. As always\, we encourage more than one attendee from a school so that they can work on a project together. \nBONUS: Ongoing coaching support! To support you as you implement throughout the year what you have learned and practiced during the summer\, this course includes conference calls facilitated by co-instructor Jessica Heffernan Ziegler scheduled from October through May. In these coaching conversations\, you and your classmates will continue to hone your collaborative leadership skills\, addressing and supporting one another’s progress and challenges—and so gain further insights\, understanding\, and expertise. \n  \nInstructors \n Joachim Ziegler\, PhD\, has been working in the fields of organizational development and human resources development since 1994. A partner in MIRA Companions for Development\, an international consulting group\, Joachim’s current list of American and international clients encompasses the banking\, pharmaceutical\, retail\, and manufacturing sectors\, as well as anthroposophical institutions and Waldorf schools. Joachim is a member of the College of Social Sciences Section at the Goetheanum and the international Association for Social Development and has taught at the University of Muenster and at Germany’s first private university in Herdecke. He holds an MA in adult education and a PhD in medical education. \nJessica Heffernan Ziegler has been the executive director of Sunbridge Institute since 2008. Her professional focus on leadership skills\, governance issues\, and personnel development are utilized both in her executive director role and in her work as co-instructor of Sunbridge’s Collaborative Leadership course and related workshops; she also teaches Waldorf school administration in Sunbridge’s Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Education program and previously taught in Sunbridge College’s Administration and Biography programs. Jessica is a partner in MIRA Companions for Development\, an international consulting group\, and works as an executive coach and organizational development consultant for Waldorf administrators and teachers and other professionals in diverse institutions and schools in both the US and Germany. She served as the first administrator and as a board member at a Waldorf school she co-founded in Everswinkel\, Germany\, and has sat on many other boards\, including her current role as trustee of the Otto Specht School in Chestnut Ridge\, NY. Jessica holds a BS in business management and did her biography training with Karl-Heinz Finke and her executive coach training with SECA International. \nYour course also includes sessions on DEI topics with Meggan Gill of Sunbridge Institute and sessions in eurythmy with Alexandra Spadea of NYC’s Rudolf Steiner School. \n  \nFor more than a decade\, Collaborative Leadership has helped individuals with leadership responsibilities in their school\, business\, or organization improve their planning and problem-solving processes.
