Read all about Summer Series 2026. \nTaught remotely in real-time\, this course offers you an invaluable opportunity to focus entirely on your upcoming first grade school year in five days brimming with presentations\, discussions\, and practical activities. \nUnder the guidance of an experienced class teacher\, you’ll discover ways to enliven your teaching and learn how to approach the blocks so that they may meet the first grader in a lively and meaningful way. With the insights of anthroposophy\, gleaned through a discussion of child development focusing on your class’s age group\, you will get to know the first grader as they cross the bridge into elementary school. \nAlong with time and space to consider and hone your skills in such practical matters as main lesson books\, block planning\, projects and activities\, and classroom management\, your course will include these key topics for first graders (and their teachers): \n\nMulticultural archetypes in fairy tales from around the world\nIntroducing the letters\nIntroducing the numbers and topics in math\nFirst grade approaches to science and social studies (perceiving the natural world experientially and socially)\nFirst grade morning circle\nFirst grade assessment\nParent work and colleagueship\n\nThese subjects will be supported by explorations in art\, music\, and movement\, giving you practical tools to take into your school year. In addition\, you’ll gain many valuable opportunities for building connections among a community of parallel colleagues from across the country to carry with you throughout your teaching. And participation in an anthroposophical study undertaken in common with all Grades participants will help enable you to build bridges between colleagues and parents once you return to your school. \nGrade-specific resource materials\, such as poems\, songs\, stories\, and main lesson book ideas\, will be provided electronically. \nNOTE: This course is taught with the expectation that you have a foundational background in Waldorf education. \n  \nLead Instructor \nSuchi Swift is a class teacher at the Otto Specht School in Chestnut Ridge\, NY. Previously\, she was a class teacher for many years at Green Meadow Waldorf School\, where she sat on the Collegium and served as lower school chair. Suchi began her teaching career in the New York City public school system in 2002\, and after eight years working across a variety of grades decided to pursue Waldorf education professionally. Prior to joining Green Meadow\, she taught at New Amsterdam School and The Brooklyn Waldorf School. Suchi earned her BA from Sarah Lawrence College\, her MS in education from Hunter College\, and her elementary teaching certificate from Sunbridge. \nPrevious Summer Series participants had this to say about Suchi: \n\nSuchi was a wonderful instructor\, and she provided a lot of very practical tips and ideas.\nThe course exceeded my expectations from the standpoint of leaving me feeling excited and inspired to start planning out my year. The main highlight for me was the sharing of the idea that we should trust ourselves and the decisions that we make.\nSuchi is such a wonderful teacher. She is so generous of heart and willing to share so much with us. I also appreciated her thoughtfulness so that she was able to answer questions satisfactorily.  \nShe presented all the subject matter clearly and straight forwardly\, with a flow that was easy to follow. I was mostly impressed with the creativity\, joy\, and fun with which she approached every lesson.\nSuchi’s classes were upbeat\, focused and informative. Her comfort with the material she presented made me feel like I could take it on and implement her creative and fun strategies.\nThere was an excellent balance of teacher led discussion\, breakout groups\, hands on practice\, and reflection.\nThis course was rich with ideas\, stories\, songs\, activities that I can bring to my classroom. It surpassed my expectations. The main highlights for me were getting a good idea of what my days are going to look like\, all the resources given\, talking with the other teachers\, and feeling supported.\nSuchi is very knowledgeable about teaching language arts to children. I like that she modeled the movement and singing exercises.\nSuchi did a beautiful job presenting us with the information we need to know to be successful teaching (the) grade.\nSuchi was an energetic speaker who brought a lot of perspective and engaging activities to the forefront. Thoroughly enjoyed and valued our time with her.\n Suchi did a wonderful job of diving deep into topics. She stayed on task\, despite the varied questions that came in. She was responsive\, inclusive\, playful and still professional. This class blew fresh wind into my sails.\nSuchi provided some great insights and useful resources. I appreciated the conversation with Meggan Gill. The amount and quality of resources available in the google classroom is wonderful.\nSuchi is unbelievable. I wish I could do my training with her every summer. What an amazing wealth of knowledge and understanding.\nWOW! I have learned so much.\nThe class wasn’t just an overview of (the) grade. It also renewed my connection to why I teach. She is grateful to be teaching and learning on traditional Hul’q’umi’num territory in the Quw’utsun Valley. Originally from Victoria\, British Columbia\, Lisa began her Waldorf journey when her own (now grown) children started their schooling at Washington Waldorf School\, and has been on a continual learning path in this direction ever since. A teacher in many different environments since 1990\, Lisa was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM in 2018 and is currently AWSNA’s BC regional representative. She holds a bachelor of education and a BFA in theatre performance\, and attained her Waldorf teacher certification from the West Coast Institute. Melanie came to River Valley in 2009 as a Kindergarten teacher before moving on to the grades. After completing an eight year cycle and graduating the Class of 2022\, she took on the role of pedagogical chair to dedicate her time to support the work of the faculty before returning to the classroom. Prior to joining the faculty at RVWS\, Melanie taught at Northern Lights\, a Waldorf-initiative school in Lake Placid\, NY\, and at the Monadnock Waldorf School. Melanie\, who started as a Waldorf parent at Hawaii’s Malamalama Waldorf School\, holds a BS in landscape architecture from Pennsylvania State University and completed her Waldorf teacher training through Antioch New England Graduate School in 2006. Her professional background includes permaculture training and organic farming\, working on farms in Europe\, Southeast Asia\, and Hawaii\, and her many interests include growing/cooking whole local foods\, dancing\, cycling\, walking in nature\, and continually learning about science.  \nPrevious participants had this to say: \n\nI appreciated Melanie’s warmth\, sincerity and range of experiences/knowledge as a classroom teacher. I valued her practical demonstrations for math\, language arts\, and other topics.\nI found the mixture of input from Melanie and all of the teachers to be extremely helpful. SUMMARY:Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education: An Immersion in the World of the Waldorf Nursery / Kindergarten
DESCRIPTION:This course will be taught remotely in real-time (and is also being offered June 28-July 3). Read all about Summer Series 2026. \nOpen to everyone\, including current and prospective early childhood educators\, parents\, grandparents\, and caregivers. \nJoin us for a wondrous journey! In this comprehensive course\, you’ll explore the essential elements of Waldorf early childhood education. Through the guidance of highly experienced Waldorf early childhood educators you’ll delve into child development; learn about rhythms\, transitions\, and the cycle of the year; explore the importance of play; examine the inner development of the teacher; experience circle time activities\, lessons in handwork\, art\, and movement\, and the essentials of a morning in a Waldorf early childhood setting; and develop a true practical understanding of Waldorf early childhood education. A perennial Sunbridge summer favorite\, this rich and extensive course has launched many early childhood careers. \n  \nCo-Instructors \n \nMotria Shuhan is the founder/director of Acorn Waldorf School in Accord\, NY\, where she serves as lead teacher in the Oaks Mixed Age Kindergarten. She also serves as a faculty member and mentor in Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program. Prior to founding Acorn\, she spent nine formative years at the Mountain Laurel Waldorf School\, working in the nursery and kindergarten and serving as pedagogical chair for three years. With a special interest in the art of puppetry\, Motria has staged shows for conferences\, festivals\, and other community events. She completed a three-year Advanced Therapeutic Course for Early Childhood Educators in Denver and her Waldorf Early Childhood training at Sunbridge College. \n \nRie Seo teaches kindergarten at The Waldorf School of Garden City; she is also a member of Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education faculty. Before joining the WSGC faculty\, Rie served as the aftercare lead teacher at New Amsterdam School. She also led nursery and parent/child programs at a Waldorf-inspired Japanese Saturday Program in Brooklyn and was the founder and lead teacher for outdoor Waldorf-inspired parent/child classes in Queens. Rie earned her BA in drama from Tamagawa University in Tokyo\, Japan; her MFA in theater design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts; a certificate in early childhood education from LifeWays; and a diploma in Waldorf early childhood teacher education from Sunbridge. \nMeggan Gill joined Sunbridge’s administrative team in 2021 as our director of education and organizational culture. She is also a member of Sunbridge’s Early Childhood and Elementary program faculty and in summer 2025 was named co-director of WECAN. A member of Alma Partners and a specialist in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, as well as Waldorf early childhood education\, Meggan’s teaching experience includes serving on the faculty of the Brooklyn Waldorf School from 2009-2020\, where she led parent-and-child and kindergarten classes and was active on the Faculty Council. Prior to joining BWS\,  she taught kindergarten at the Olympia Waldorf School and parent-and-child and nursery classes at the New Amsterdam School. Meggan\, who originally hails from the Pacific Northwest and is a certified yoga teacher\, earned her undergraduate degree in health sciences from The Evergreen State College and her certificate in Waldorf early childhood education from Sunbridge. \nParticipants who took this course previously had this to say: \n\nAmazing. This is one of the best courses I’ve taken in my life.\nI am beyond grateful.\nThe class was a fun mix of lecture\, break-out groups and experiential learning.\nIt was well structured\, the faculty was exceptional and held each class with knowledge\, joy and humor. I appreciated the opportunity we were given to be broken into groups\, discuss topics and get to know more about the participants.\nI found the topics engaging\, loved the puppetry and am thankful for the library of music!\nI really enjoyed attending lectures and the articles that were provided for homework. It was great to dive right in and begin learning more about Waldorf EC. I found everyone to be very passionate and present in the program. I found that I got something out of every class.\nIt was an incredibly insightful and grounding experience.\nNot only am I walking away with tools in my pocket\, but with a growth and awareness in myself that I was not expecting.\nI have never met a teacher who in five days would be able to change a group of strangers in such a profound way.\nI really enjoyed Motria’s way of sharing information\, her patience and fluid way of moving through topics. It is clear that she is very passionate about her work and enjoys sharing that with others. \nI loved Rie’s ability to bring you into the work (regardless of it being on zoom.) SUMMARY:Approaching Grade Four: Inspiration and Guidance for Your Year
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for Waldorf teachers and home school parents. Read all about Summer Series 2026. \nTaught remotely in real time\, this course offers you an invaluable opportunity to focus entirely on your upcoming fourth grade school year in five days brimming with presentations\, discussions\, and practical activities. \nUnder the guidance of an experienced class teacher\, you’ll discover ways to enliven your teaching and how to approach the blocks so that they may meet the fourth grader in a deep and meaningful way. With the insights of anthroposophy\, gleaned through a discussion of child development focusing specifically on your class’s age group\, you will get to know the fourth grade child in depth as they step into a more objective relationship to learning. \nAlong with time and space to consider and hone your skills in such practical matters as main lesson books\, block planning\, projects and activities\, and classroom management\, your course will include such key topics for fourth graders—and their teachers—as: \n\nTopics in language arts\nPre-colonial/indigenous approaches to local geography\nNorse mythology and beyond: fourth grade stories of world-making\nTopics in math\nFourth grade approach to zoology\nFourth grade approach to geography and local/state history\nFourth grade morning circle\nFourth grade assessment\nParent work and colleagueship\n\nThese subjects will be supported by explorations in art\, music\, and movement\, giving you practical tools to take into your school year. In addition\, you’ll gain many valuable opportunities for building connections among a community of parallel colleagues from across the country to carry with you throughout your teaching. And participation in an anthroposophical study undertaken in common with all Grades participants will help enable you to build bridges between colleagues and parents once you return to your school. \nGrade-specific resource materials useful for your year\, including poems\, songs\, stories\, and main lesson book ideas\, will be provided to you electronically. \nNOTE: This course is taught with the expectation that you have a foundational background in Waldorf education. \n  \nLead Instructor \nJoshua Gartland has been a Waldorf teacher since 2005. After taking his first class from 1st-4th grade at the Waldorf School of Garden City\, he joined the faculty of the Waldorf School of Atlanta\, where he led classes from grades 1-5\, 1-8\, and 1-3. He now works online\, bringing key elements of Waldorf education to English speaking students worldwide. Prior to becoming a Waldorf teacher\, Josh was active in theatre productions\, studied and performed as a mime\, and managed one of the largest yoga facilities in the country.
