SUMMARY:Understanding and Teaching History as an Evolution of Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:A workshop for middle school and high school teachers of history\, as well as teachers of the history of art\, music\, drama\, architecture\, and language \nFacilitated by Stephen Keith Sagarin\, PhD \n\nA central problem of learning history is being able to understand and imagine the consciousness of people who are distant from us in time. This workshop\, based on the work of Rudolf Steiner and Owen Barfield\, offers an opportunity to look at history by way of understanding the evolution of consciousness and to explore ways this understanding can inform how history is taught. Discover new inspiration for your work and come away with new ideas as you and your colleagues bring your own curricula to discuss\, compare\, and share. \nYour workshop includes lecture\, discussion\, curriculum sharing\, and artistic activity. \nStephen Keith Sagarin\, PhD\, is a member of the Core Faculty of the Sunbridge Elementary Teacher Education Program. He is also Faculty Chair\, co-founder\, and teacher at the Berkshire (formerly Great Barrington) Waldorf High School\, MA. A former Editor of the Research Bulletin of the Research Institute for Waldorf Education\, Dr. Sagarin writes\, lectures\, mentors teachers\, and consults with Waldorf schools on teaching and administration. He has taught history of education at Teachers College\, NY; human development at the City University of New York; and U.S. and world history at Berkshire Community College. He is the author of “The Story of Waldorf Education in the United States: Past\, Present\, and Future” (SteinerBooks\, 2011)\, the only history of Waldorf Education in the United States. His blog\, “What is Education?” may be found at ssagarin.blogspot.com. Dr. Sagarin has a PhD in history from Columbia University and a BA in art history and fine art from Princeton University. SUMMARY:Singing Games with Anna Rainville: Joyful Learning through Movement
DESCRIPTION:Singing games carry a long and respected tradition of joyful music activity for children\, adults\, families\, and communities. Singing and moving together in simple or complicated forms is\, simply\, contagious joy. Appealing to all ages—whether at home\, in a classroom\, or at a faculty meeting—singing games provide healthy opportunities for the lifting of spirits\, sensory integration\, and community building. In this active workshop designed for teachers\, parents\, grandparents\, caregivers\, and friends\, participants will receive an introduction to the wisdom contained in singing games and learn a repertoire of singing games to be enjoyed in early childhood and early grades settings. \nInstructor Anna Rainville has been mentoring the creative spirit in children and adults through dynamic play\, movement\, nature\, and the arts for over 30 years. A former Waldorf class teacher with 15 years experience in Los Altos\, CA\, and Lexington\, MA\, and an award-winning public school kindergarten teacher in the Santa Cruz Mountains (CA) where she taught for 11 years\, Anna currently  mentors teachers in public\, private and charter schools and is a guest instructor\, workshop leader\, and consultant throughout the United States and abroad. She also co-directs the Kindergarten Forum in Saratoga\, CA\, and since 1992 has facilitated teacher renewal and integrated arts curriculum development at the Public School Institute of Rudolf Steiner College and in the Philippines. A founding board member of the National Kindergarten Alliance and a past delegate to the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America\, she is the recent recipient of grants to develop outdoor play and nature programs in an early childhood center in a low income community and to mentor an inner city school in San Jose\, CA. In 2012\, she completed three years of post-graduate training in remedial education with an emphasis on kinesthetic learning. \nAnna is the author of Singing Games for Families\, Schools\, and Communities\, about which Nancy Mellon\, author of Storytelling and the Art of Imagination\, Storytelling with Children and Body Eloquence\, wrote: “If you are a teacher and wish to invite the children you teach to find balance and gleeful kinesthetic skill\, there can be no more enjoyable way to go about it. If you are a remedial specialist\, there’s much to be learned from the old wisdom weaving in these tunes and dance steps. If you are a family member who wishes to warm the core of joy hidden in daily struggles\, choose a song in this book and take hands to find the buoyancy that has lifted generations. If you are baffled by community dynamics\, look for a new and refreshing pattern in the pages of this book. Find your voice and put on your dusty dancing shoes. Here is a panacea that works!” \nPlease join us for this lively spring workshop. \nSchedule\n9am-4pm\, Saturday\, April 25 \nFee/Registration\nWorkshop fee is $95 (includes $25 non-refundable registration fee) when registering in advance here.\nNOTE: Online registration closes 9am\, Friday\, April 24. SUMMARY:Collaborative Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Personalized Strategies for Becoming a More Effective Member of Your Leadership Team \nProfessional development for decision-makers—including administrators\, directors\, board and committee members\, and faculty chairs—working in Waldorf schools or other workplace settings \nNo matter what your position or title is (administrator\, department head\, board member\, faculty or section chair\, director\, administrative committee member\, college of teachers member\, staffer\, key volunteer\, etc.)\, if you participate in a planning or problem-solving process in your school\, business\, or organization\, you have leadership responsibilities. In this highly-useful course for leaders and decision-makers\, our focus is on practical work. \nThrough a process imbued with the anthroposophical understanding of the human being and successfully applied in organizations from multi-million dollar nationals to Waldorf schools\, you will learn how to improve your effectiveness as a member of your leadership team. \nEach participant is asked to bring to the course his or her own organizational question\, project\, or challenge. Using your real-life cases\, we will apply these four core models for collaborative leadership: \n– Three main leadership tasks: maintaining and creating identity / creating space for healthy\, stable relationships / assuring professional results\n– Diagnostic and planning tools: how to look at an organization as a whole and understand the dynamics of intersecting segments\n– How to create processes toward healthy decision-making\n– The balance between power and trust \nYour course takeaway will be an individualized action plan for the question\, project\, or challenge you have brought with you\, along with an understanding of the necessary skill set with which to execute it. \nBonus: Ongoing coaching support! To support you as you implement throughout the year what you have learned and practiced during the summer\, this course includes conference calls facilitated by co-instructor Jessica Heffernan Ziegler scheduled from October through May. In these one-and-a-half-hour-long coaching conversations\, you and your classmates will continue to hone your collaborative leadership skills\, addressing and supporting one another’s progress and challenges\, and so gain further insights\, understanding\, and expertise. \nInstructor Joachim Ziegler\, PhD\, has been working in the fields of Organizational Development and Human Resources Development since 1994. A partner in MIRA\, an international group of consultants\, Joachim’s current list of American and international clients encompasses the banking\, pharmaceutical\, retail\, and manufacturing sectors\, as well as anthroposophical institutions and Waldorf schools. Joachim is a member of the College of Social Sciences Section at the Goetheanum and the international Association for Social Development and has taught at the University of Muenster and at Germany’s first private university in Herdecke. He holds an MA in Adult Education and a PhD in Medical Education. \ninstructor Jessica Heffernan Ziegler has been the Executive Director of Sunbridge Institute since 2008; previously\, she taught collaboration and group dynamics in Sunbridge College’s Administration\, Biography\, and Elementary Teacher Education programs. Jessica\, who holds a BS in Business Management\, did biography training with Karl-Heinz Finke and is currently engaged in training with SECA International. \nStudents who took Collaborative Leadership in previous summers had this to say: \n~ The experience and dedication to the whole process that our facilitators brought to a very rich and full week was very\, very satisfying.\n~The professional material was exceptional. The clarity of the presentation was superb.\n~ There was a surprisingly beautiful balance of theory and artistic work that was completely relevant and complimentary.\n~ Excellent content\, excellent presenters.\n~ I am working in a school\, yet I know I can also apply this training to any business.\n~ I’ve been wanting to take this course for some time; I will encourage others from my school to attend.\n~ The coaching calls have been helpful on several levels… having a like-minded community of school leadership team members reflecting on the same topic at the same time deepens the quality of our leadership process (and keeps) our summer work focused and moving forward.\n~ This course exceeded my expectations! \nSchedule\nSunday\, July 23: Optional campus tour 5:30-6pm; Registration 6-7pm; First session runs from 7-9pm\nMonday\, July 24-Thursday\, July 27: Classes begin each day by 8:30am and run through 5:30pm\, with an hour for lunch and short mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks.\nFriday\, July 28: Classes begin by 8:30am and end between 12-1pm\, with a mid-morning break. \nFee\n$875 (includes all materials\, monthly coaching calls\, and non-refundable $85 registration fee).
