SUMMARY:The Art of Storytelling: Using the Language of the Archetypes for a Just and Healing Education
DESCRIPTION:An online workshop for teachers of all grade levels \nDescription \nStories are our unique human inheritance. Our collective memories have been stored in the world’s fairy tales\, folk tales\, myths\, and histories shared down the generations. Through stories\, we have a line of communication into our unconscious depths and to the spiritual world. \nIn this workshop\, we will use theories of the archetypes from analytic psychology to shine a new light on Steiner’s indications for a story-based developmental curriculum. We will take a courageous look at the historical and social contexts for those philosophical underpinnings\, and challenge ourselves to uncover how stories can be used either to reinforce or to challenge racism\, sexism\, and other unjust systems of power. \nThrough presentation\, small group discussion\, individual reflection and research\, participants will: \n\nReflect on the arc of storytelling in Waldorf schools from early childhood through adolescence\, following the unfolding consciousness of the developing child\, from fairy tale to myth to history.\nDevelop plans for renewing their program’s story content toward the ideal of a just and liberatory education that supports the development of every child as a whole human being.\nRefine teaching strategies for story-based\, age-appropriate approaches to supporting student inquiry with a social justice lens.\nConsider how storytelling can be used in the service of generational healing and historical meaning-making\, for our students and ourselves.\n\nFacilitator \n \nIrene Richardson is the gardening teacher and assistant pedagogical chair at the River Valley Waldorf School. Previously\, she served as class teacher to three groups of Waldorf students\, in Princeton\, Tucson\, and Philadelphia. A love of mythology and folklore\, the natural world\, and growing things were common threads that ran through Irene’s undergraduate degree in comparative religion at Bard College\, her master’s in education at Sunbridge College\, and her certificate in biodynamics at the Pfeiffer Center. When she is not teaching\, Irene is supporting collaborative leadership and self-development in Waldorf schools through her work as an AWSNA delegate. She is enthusiastic about the work of carrying Waldorf education forward into its second century and toward liberation for all\, and balances her work life with time exploring forests and museums with her child and collecting stacks of books she hopes to read eventually. \nSchedule \nThis workshop takes place in live Zoom sessions on the following dates/times: \nFriday evening\, April 4: 7:00 pm-8:30 pm Eastern (NY) Time\nSaturday\, April 5: 10:30 am-12:00 pm and 12:30 pm-2:00 pm Eastern (NY) Time \nNOTE ON ATTENDANCE: In order to receive a Certificate of Completion\, you must attend all three sessions. \nSessions will not be recorded. \nCost \nEarly Bird (Register by March 28 and save $25!): $185  \nRegular (Register after March 28): $210\nCost includes a $25 non-refundable registration fee \nDiscount options  \n25% off for \n\nSchools sending more than one participant\nSunbridge teacher education program graduates\nPayments made in Canadian dollars\n\nDiscounts may not be combined \n\nFree for current Sunbridge program students in good standing (plus a $25 non-refundable registration fee)\n\n\nQuestions?\nPlease contact Barbara Vitale\, admissions and summer coordinator\, at info@sunbridge.edu or 845-425-0055 x20 \n  \nWe reserve the right to make faculty substitutions when necessary. SUMMARY:Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education: An Immersion in the World of the Waldorf Nursery / Kindergarten
DESCRIPTION:This week’s course is being taught in-person at Sunbridge. For those who would prefer attending online\, this course is also being offered virtually in July. Read all about Summer Series 2025. \nOpen to everyone\, including current and prospective early childhood educators\, parents\, grandparents\, and caregivers. \nJoin us for a wondrous journey! In this comprehensive course\, you’ll explore the essential elements of Waldorf early childhood education. Through the guidance of highly experienced Waldorf early childhood educators you’ll delve into child development; learn about rhythms\, transitions\, and the cycle of the year; explore the importance of play; examine the inner development of the teacher; experience circle time activities\, lessons in handwork\, art\, and movement\, and the essentials of a morning in a Waldorf early childhood setting; and develop a true practical understanding of Waldorf early childhood education. A perennial Sunbridge summer favorite\, this rich and extensive course has launched many early childhood careers. \nInstructors \nLisa Miccio\, lead\, is founder\, director\, and parent & child playgroup teacher at The Berry Basket Playgroups and Family Programs in Warwick\, NY; she also provides professional development training and mentoring of early childhood educators and was a longtime member of the Sunbridge Board of Trustees. From 2022-23\, Lisa served Acorn Waldorf School as the Neighboring Tree Project Specialist\, overseeing a grant-funded AWS initiative that aimed to create community partnerships with local early childhood educators\, schools\, and centers. She taught kindergarten at The Waldorf School of Garden City\, where she chaired the DEIJ committee\, from 2017-2022\, and for a dozen years prior was on the faculty of Green Meadow Waldorf School\, where she taught in and served as a co-chair of the early childhood section\, directed the early childhood admissions and family programs\, and was a member of the Collegium\, the Collegium Committee\, and the Board of Trustees. Lisa’s teaching experience also includes teaching and mentoring in the Kathmandu (Nepal) Waldorf Kindergarten. She holds a BA in English from the College of Charleston\, an MS in Elementary Education from CW Post\, Long Island University\, and an MS in Waldorf Education from Sunbridge College. She is the mother of two Waldorf-educated sons. \n \nMotria Shuhan is the founder/director of Acorn Waldorf School in Accord\, NY\, where she serves as lead teacher in the Oaks Mixed Age Kindergarten. Prior to Founding AWS\, she spent nine formative years at the Mountain Laurel Waldorf School\, working in the nursery and kindergarten and serving as pedagogical chair for three years. Motria also serves as a mentor and educator in Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program. With a special interest in the art of puppetry\, Motria has staged shows for conferences\, festivals\, and other community events. She completed a three-year Advanced Therapeutic Course for Early Childhood Educators in Denver and her Waldorf Early Childhood training at Sunbridge College. \n \nRie Seo teaches kindergarten at The Waldorf School of Garden City. Before joining the WSGC faculty\, Rie served as the aftercare lead teacher at New Amsterdam School. She also led nursery and parent/child programs at a Waldorf-inspired Japanese Saturday Program in Brooklyn and was the founder and lead teacher for outdoor Waldorf-inspired parent/child classes in Queens. Rie earned her BA in drama from Tamagawa University in Tokyo\, Japan; her MFA in theater design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts; a certificate in early childhood education from LifeWays; and a diploma in Waldorf early childhood teacher education from Sunbridge. \nMeggan Gill is Sunbridge’s director of education and organizational culture\, a member of the Sunbridge program faculty\, and the incoming WECAN co-director. A specialist in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, she is also a member of Alma Partners and an active committee member and workshop presenter for AWSNA and WECAN. Meggan’s teaching experience includes serving on the faculty of the Brooklyn Waldorf School from 2009-2020\, where she led parent-and-child and kindergarten classes and was active on the Faculty Council. Prior to joining BWS\, she taught kindergarten at the Olympia Waldorf School and parent-and-child and nursery classes at the New Amsterdam School. Meggan earned her undergraduate degree in health sciences from The Evergreen State College\, her MEd in curriculum and instruction from SUNY Empire State\, and her certificate in Waldorf early childhood education from Sunbridge. \nParticipants who took this course previously had this to say: \n\nThe Intro to EC course exceeded my expectations.\nAn amazing mix of hands-on experience\, interactive group work\, and lecture content.\nIt was well structured\, the faculty was exceptional and held each class with knowledge\, joy and humor.\nAmazing. This is one of the best courses I’ve taken in my life.\nI am beyond grateful.\nNot only am I walking away with tools in my pocket\, but with a growth and awareness in myself that I was not expecting.\nLisa is wonderful. I have never met a teacher who in five days would be able to change a group of strangers in such a profound way.\nI loved Rie’s art demos and her ability to bring you into the work. She is clearly passionate and I enjoyed her lessons.\nI really enjoyed Motria’s way of sharing information\, her patience and fluid way of moving through topics. It is clear that she is very passionate about her work and enjoys sharing that with others.\nThe class was a fun mix of lecture and experiential learning.\nI found the topics engaging\, loved the puppetry and am thankful for the library of music!\nI really enjoyed attending lectures and the articles that were provided for homework. It was great to dive right in and begin learning more about Waldorf EC. I found everyone to be very passionate and present in the program. SUMMARY:Deepening the Picture of the Whole Child: Integrating Waldorf Wisdom with Current Sensory Integration Research and Relationship to Neurodiversity
DESCRIPTION:An online workshop series for Waldorf early childhood and early grades teachers consisting of six two-hour Saturday sessions occurring from October through April  \nBackground \nWaldorf education works with a picture of twelve senses. Mainstream research validates nine. Both streams include senses that tell us about our internal state\, senses that tell us about the external world\, and senses that we use in social interactions. The goal is that the senses will work together\, which is described as “sensory integration.” When there is disruption\, children will show their distress through perplexing and often challenging physical and social behaviors. \nIn this 6-part workshop series\, Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program co-director Nancy Blanning serves as guide for an exploration into sensory development\, focusing on how the two streams of Waldorf education and mainstream research complement and confirm each other\, and how we can use this knowledge to better help the children in our care.  \nWorkshop Description \nThe content of our sessions will concentrate on the body’s senses of touch\, life/well-being\, self-movement\, and balance as foundation for physical\, academic\, emotional and social development to come. We will consider the gifts each sense brings to the child as well as what can be seen when the sense are not serving the child well. Our main focus will be in how to encourage typical development in general and to respond in supportive action to distressed sensing. We will look at how understanding of the senses can guide how we respond to and support children whose sensing systems and neurology are different. We will also bring consideration of neurodiversity in studying each of these basic senses. We want to become conversant and comfortable with mainstream vocabulary and picturing of the senses. Doing so will give us mainstream recognition when we interact with caregivers and mainstream therapeutic support professionals. \nWho Will Benefit From This Workshop \nDesigned for early childhood educators\, grades 1-3 teachers\, and others interested in deepening their understanding of how children grow into the world\, this series is both open to new participants and will serve as a review\, deepening\, and extension of last year’s series for returning attendees. In addition to studying each of the four foundational senses in depth\, we will also consider in each session how various expressions of neurodiversity have accompanying extreme responses to the world surrounding them. We will consider the support already inherent in the Waldorf early childhood classroom that we can more consciously and deliberately engage to all children’s benefit.  \nOur goals professionally will be to: \n\nObjectively observe and describe what we see\nUnderstand what we see\nRespond–what can we do both proactively and in the moment?\nTalk about it to caregivers\, colleagues and mainstream support professionals in ways that build connection\n\nOur goals personally will be to open up an objective understanding and appreciation to these children’s unique experiences in life. This study does not offer quick and easy answers. Our collective interest and desire to assist—not “fix”—the child will open up possibilities for new inspiration. \nSession Topics \nEach two-hour session will include Waldorf and mainstream description and vocabulary for each sense. Neurodiverse situations and the sense will be considered. Appropriate vocabulary will be presented and ideas offered for communicating observations and questions to build connection of trust with the child’s parents / caregivers. \nOctober 18: The Landscape of the Senses—How does each sense help us live in the body\, in the external world\, and in the social world with other people? We will look at how we support the Life Sense/Interoception to assure comfort and a sense of security in the body. Here we will recognize the strength of the Waldorf early childhood “curriculum” of rhythm\, routine\, movement\, practical work\, and artistic activities in helping to regulate sensory functioning. \nNovember 22: Tactile/Touch Sense—Exploring hyper (extra reactive) and hypo (under reactive) responses as extreme edges of sensing touch. How do we recognize these and respond to these extremes? We will also consider some movement and touching games that invite reluctant children to participate. \n January 10: Proprioceptive/Self-movement (Limbs\, muscles\, nerves\, and body-geography)—Exploring the balanced and extreme edges as shown in behavior. How can we offer invitation to strengthening this sense? In-door and out-door possibilities will be suggested. In this session we will also give a brief overview of retained immature movement patterns (infantile reflexes) that often interfere with proprioception.  \nFebruary 28: Vestibular/Balance—Orientation and security of the body in the three planes of space. How can we offer enriched opportunities to strengthen balance? Balance and proprioception are partners in supporting each other\, so we will look at the two together. Continued consideration of retained movement patterns will continue. \nMarch 7: Communicating with Others—What do we wish to communicate to parents and caregivers? How can we do this in ways that build trust and connection? \nApril 18: Review and Festival of Movement Idea—We will consider a particular scenario of a child in sensory distress and together apply the ideas our study has suggested–and create new ones as well. \n  \nFacilitator \nNancy Blanning has co-directed Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program since 2015 and has served on its faculty since 1994. Now retired from a nearly forty-year career at The Denver Waldorf School\, where she served as a kindergarten teacher and member of the educational support staff\, Nancy’s main focus is therapeutic education with a special emphasis on developmental movement as supporting young children’s physical incarnation and sensory development. \nNancy is a frequent keynote speaker and presenter at national and international early childhood conferences and workshops and is a faculty member for Denver’s Nurturing the Roots Therapeutic Course. SUMMARY:Waldorf Weekend: Foundations and Fundamentals of Waldorf Education from Early Childhood through High School
DESCRIPTION:Open to students of education and especially relevant for new and prospective Waldorf community members (teachers\, parents and grandparents\, staffers\, and board members) \nOur lively and informative Waldorf Weekend workshop is designed to provide an experiential survey of the basis and basics of Waldorf education. In addition to exploring the Waldorf curriculum across the grades\, your workshop includes a discussion of Rudolf Steiner’s insights in human development and a look into the anthroposophical underpinnings of the Waldorf impulse. You’ll enjoy hands-on artistic activities and there’ll be plenty of time for questions and answers. Our Waldorf Weekends are a most memorable—and fun!—learning experience. \nThis workshop takes place in person.  \n  \nPresenters \nMeggan Gill ’10 is Sunbridge’s director of education and organizational culture\, a member of the Sunbridge program faculty\, and the co-director of WECAN. Meggan earned her undergraduate degree in health sciences from The Evergreen State College\, her MEd in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in Waldorf education from SUNY Empire State\, and her certificate in Waldorf early childhood education from Sunbridge.\n \n\n\n \nElizabeth Hall is a longtime member of the Sunbridge Elementary Teacher Education program faculty and also teaches anthroposophical studies in our Early Childhood program. The information was communicated in a clear way\, and I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of what it means to look at the world through the Waldorf lens.\n~ It was excellent. The instructors were extremely knowledgeable.\n~ The weekend was outstanding! I was deeply inspired\, both as a teacher and as a human being.\n~ Highly informed\, warm-hearted facilitators with a deep concern for the group’s understanding and experience.\n~ This was one of the single most wonderful weekends in my life. I came with the intention of learning more about Waldorf education. I am leaving with a feeling of a shifting of my soul.\n~ This was a wonderful workshop\, and I highly recommend that everyone from teachers to parents take interest and reap the benefits. \n\n\n  \nSchedule \nFriday\, January 23: Check-in registration takes place from 6:30pm-6:50pm. DESCRIPTION:This online workshop is an introductory experience for individuals interested in exploring Grounded in Practice\, a new\, experiential Waldorf Foundation Studies program designed for: \n\nAnyone interested in Waldorf education and teaching\nEducators new to the Waldorf movement\nWaldorf community members (admins\, staffers\, assistant & subject teachers\, etc.)\nIndividuals looking for a stronger foundation before entering Waldorf teacher training\nTeacher training applicants or students looking to fulfill program prerequisites or requirements\n\nAbout Grounded in Practice \nLaunched in 2025 by Rubeena Sandhu and Sarah Nelson of The New Adult Learning Institute\, Grounded in Practice connects anthroposophical tenets with practical application to the Waldorf classroom. Integrating Steiner’s anthroposophical principles for teachers\, Martyn Rawson’s Generative Principles\, and a picture of child development explored through the arts and teacher preparation practices\, Grounded in Practice is constructed so participants can immediately apply their program experience to any age classroom\, using newly-acquired imaginative and developmental methodologies to form the basis for their own planning\, teaching\, and assessment practices. The full yearlong Grounded in Practice program consists of an in-person weeklong retreat in the summer followed by twice-monthly online learning modules incorporating live sessions and interactive assignments that take place from September-May. \nOur introductory weekend affords participants to sample the full Grounded in Practice program by exploring its three main elements: spirituality\, experience\, and classroom pedagogy. \nOur workshop begins on Friday evening with an introduction to Martyn Rawson’s generative principles and a phenomenological exploration of the spiritual aspects of being human. We will then further explore how these dimensions reveal themselves in lived experience and connect to child development and classroom practice. \nOn Saturday\, we will deepen this work through experiential and contemplative practices supporting developmental teaching strategies\, not as abstraction\, but as a living reality shaping both personal growth and pedagogy. Movement\, singing\, and speech will serve as practical models\, allowing us to experience firsthand how child development is nourished and enlivens the classroom. \nThe Generative Principles Applied in Grounded in Practice \n\nWaldorf education takes the spiritual dimension seriously\nSense of coherence is the basis for healthy learning & well-being\nThe quality of the teacher’s preparation influences the quality of learning\nStudents need to be ready to learn and they need time to learn\nLearning is a rhythmical process\nLearning processes are structured over time\nBlock teachings strengthens learning dispositions over time\nDirect experience is the basis for learning\nActivating the imagination through vivid pictorial descriptions and images is another powerful starting point for learning\nA phenomenological approach enables the organic growth of knowledge\nThe teaching must be artistic\nThe self-activity of the students is essential to the learning\nGood teaching and learning depends on the development of the senses\n\n  \nFor Waldorf teacher education students: According to AWSNA guidelines for teacher preparation requirements\, the full Grounded in Practice program fulfills 100 hours of Foundation Studies as required by some Waldorf teacher training institutes. Teacher training students should contact your teacher training institute to see how this may apply to you. \nWhile Sunbridge does not have a Foundation Studies prerequisite\, our Elementary Teacher Education program gladly accepts completion of the entire 10-month Grounded in Practice program for transfer credit or to fulfill supplemental hours. \n  \n  \nGrounded in Practice Directors/Facilitators \n \nSarah Nelson has been a Waldorf educator and advocate for over 27 years\, serving as a class teacher\, early childhood educator\, pedagogical administrator\, mentor\, and leader within the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA). Currently\, she works with various Waldorf schools while splitting her time between British Columbia and Maui\, HI. Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in adolescent and child psychology from UMass\, a master’s in education from Antioch New England\, and a Waldorf teaching certificate. \n \nRubeena Sandhu has been a Waldorf educator and school head for over 25 years. Previously\, she took a class from sixth-eighth grade at Green Meadow Waldorf School. A graduate of the College of William and Mary\, where she majored in English and anthropology\, Rebecca discovered Waldorf education while studying Mayan archaeology at Tulane University\, from which she earned an MA in anthropology. She also holds an MSEd in Waldorf elementary education from Sunbridge College. \nParticipants of previous Summer Series Grades courses with Rebecca had this to say about their experience: \n\nLove Rebecca! Truly an incredible teacher and dedicated teacher of teachers!\nHer professionalism\, warmth\, expertise and experience are a gift! Definitely one of the best instructors I’ve had in my years of grades intensives.\nRebecca was open\, honest\, organized\, professional. She was able to cover a wide range of topics and stayed on track and on time. I appreciated her willingness to discuss any question or topic. She balanced the time well\, gave resources\, gave ideas\, but left space for us to figure things out on our own.\nRebecca did a beautiful job of weaving in the comments of this group\, while also addressing questions and covering the topics with her own deep experience. I loved learning from her and appreciate her warm approach to the challenges of 8th grade students all over the continent and in so many different circumstances.\nHighlights: The amount and quality of resources on Google Classroom\, the knowledge\, energy and generosity of the teachers\, the chance to hear valuable insights from participants\nSuch a wealth of knowledge\, enthusiasm and inspiration!\nRebecca’s recommendations were modern and deep. I really appreciated her book recommendations and how many resources she shared in the Google drive. I will be using them throughout the year and they will help shape my year and make it easier. I especially appreciated how the history was broken down by block as I was feeling overwhelmed about how to get through everything.\nI found the instructors’ energy and passion for their subjects to be really valuable. It was evident they wanted to be there. There were lots of great resources shared through the Google Classroom. I will find it really helpful that it is available during the upcoming school year.\nThis is the first time I’ve attended a course that an instructor began with acknowledging the traditional people on the lands and including that as part of our introductions. There was continuous talk and acknowledgement of Indigenous people. I also appreciated the commitment to investigating how to meet the needs of students today\, in North America\, and asking ourselves about Eurocentric practices and the devastating effects of colonialism.\nRebecca’s passion for teaching is the most inspiring thing… and that’s saying a lot! because content was great.\nRebecca offered wonderful insights and shared her experiences in an honest and authentic way and I really appreciate her ideas\, thoughts and wisdom. She is incredibly generous and forthcoming with her resources and ideas. I find it so very helpful to see the overviews and materials she provided as I plan my year!!\n\nYour course also includes sessions in movement with Solana Hoffmann-Carter\, math with Olga Domokos\, physics with Rosana Portillo\, and chemistry with Caroline Martin.  \n  \n\nSchedule \nThis course takes place June 21-26 in a synchronous online classroom.
