SUMMARY:Calling It Like It Is: Uncovering and Dismantling Racism in the Waldorf Movement
DESCRIPTION:The protests that followed the killings of members of our Black communities in spring 2020 served to wake many people up to the realities of racism in America—realities to which the Waldorf movement has not been immune. Accepting the fact that racism exists within Waldorf education and taking on the work of recognizing and eradicating it from our classrooms is a goal to which we must commit ourselves if we are to truly educate our children (and ourselves) toward freedom. \nCalling It Like It Is: Uncovering and Dismantling Racism in the Waldorf Movement was first presented by Sunbridge in September 2020. The need for and interest in the event proved to be so widespread\, it has been repeated to new audiences several times since. This workshop is an encore presentation of that original event. \nDescription  \nOver the course of three one-and-a-half-hour sessions taking place virtually in real-time on Friday evening and Saturday morning and afternoon\, this workshop will: \n\nDefine and articulate the ways many Waldorf school curricula center whiteness and set it up as an ideal\, to the detriment of all;\nUse the frameworks of racial identity formation and biography work to better understand how we become who we are in a racialized society and how that impacts our engagement with the children in our care;\nShare practical tools\, resources\, and success stories with the goal of dismantling racism in Waldorf schools and communities.\n\nRegistrants will be sent advanced reading material. \nFacilitators \nKeelah Helwig is currently an early childhood educator and chair of the Early Childhood program at The Waldorf School of Garden City (her alma mater). Keelah has served as chair of WSGS’s College of Teachers and is a founding member and chair of its Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Committee. She is proud to be a founding member of the Sunbridge Diversity Fund Scholarship Committee and is also a Board trustee of Sunbridge\, AWSNA\, and WECAN. A skilled facilitator\, mentor\, evaluator\, and shepherd\, Keelah is passionate about motivating school communities and inspiring lasting and meaningful change. Following her WSGS graduation\, Keelah earned a BA in theatre from Spelman College and her masters in early childhood education from Sunbridge College. \nVicki Larson served as director of communications and marketing at Green Meadow Waldorf School from 2011-2021 and is a founding member of Sunbridge’s Diversity Fund Scholarship Committee. Vicki\, who has been involved in anti-racism initiatives and community organizing for social justice for more than 20 years\, has been a consultant to Waldorf schools across the US since 2014; she has also held positions in publishing\, resource development\, translation and interpretation (English/Spanish)\, international women’s human rights\, and diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. She graduated with honors from the University of Florida in Gainesville with a major in English and minors in religion and women’s studies. \nHeather Scott is currently a core faculty member of Sunbridge’s Waldorf High School Teacher Education program and pedagogical director of the Waldorf School of Lexington. Prior to moving east to join the Lexington faculty in 2023\, Heather worked at The Waldorf School of San Diego for 17 years\, where she taught high school humanities and graduated two eighth grade classes. She also spent time teaching at The Community School for Creative Education\, a public\, Waldorf-inspired charter in Oakland\, CA. Heather’s interests are in diversifying Waldorf middle- and high-school curricula. She is passionate about supporting anti-racism through a grounding in history and biography and has a decades’ long interest in African-American culture and literature\, especially attuned to Black women writers. Heather earned her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA from The University of New Hampshire\, Durham. \nAll three presenters are members of Alma Partners. \n  \nSchedule \nThis workshop takes place in live Zoom sessions. SUMMARY:Decolonizing Our Curriculum\, with Martyn Rawson & Linda Williams
DESCRIPTION:Born out of interest in instilling and promoting diversity\, equity\, and inclusivity in classrooms and school communities\, Waldorf educators nationwide and beyond are eager to bring changes to what constitutes a Waldorf education. But decolonizing the Waldorf curriculum is more fundamental than just adding more diversity to what we teach\, and it’s even more than providing mirrors (so children recognize themselves)\, windows (into other cultures and ways of being)\, and sliding glass doors (to enter other worlds in the imagination). The question of decolonizing curriculum—not only what we teach\, but how\, when\, why\, where\, and by whom—is really a question of deconstructing un-reflected\, tacit assumptions\, expectations\, and prejudices. It’s about re-envisioning Waldorf education and its relationship to Rudolf Steiner and anthroposophy. \nThrough advance reading\, facilitator presentation\, directed questions for small group conversations\, journaling\, and research tasks\, this important workshop will provide you with a thought-provoking analysis and awareness of what it really takes to decolonize a Waldorf curriculum. Those of you who heard Martyn Rawson speak at the Goetheanum at last April’s World Teachers Conference will be afforded an opportunity to pursue this topic with him further. We are very pleased that joining Martyn will be longtime Waldorf educator and speaker (and fellow Goetheanum presenter)\, Linda Williams. If you haven’t worked with either before\, you are in for a very meaningful experience. \nFacilitators \n \nMartyn Rawson was born in Glasgow\, Scotland\, in 1954 and started Waldorf teaching in 1979. Today he is still teaching: high school history\, art studies\, and English at Christian Morgenstern School in Hamburg\, Germany\, and as a professor at Freie Hocshule Stuttgart\, Germany\, and National Tsinghua University\, Taiwan. He is also a teacher trainer and teaches regular courses in China\, Taiwan\, South Africa\, Europe\, and occasionally the US and Canada. A co-founder of York Steiner School (UK)\, Martyn earned his EdD from the University of Plymouth (UK) and is an active researcher whose main fields are curriculum research (including decolonizing)\, student learning\, and assessment.  He publishes in mainstream publications\, academic journals\, Waldorf publications\, and on his website\, and his books can be found at Steiner Press. Martyn is educational advisor to the European Council of Steiner Waldorf Education and a member of the European Commission Working Group on Schools. \nCo-chair and a founding member of Sunbridge’s Diversity Fund Committee\, as well as a Sunbridge Board trustee\, Linda Williams ’87 is currently grades coordinator and faculty chair at the Detroit Waldorf School\, where she first started her class teaching career in 1987 and graduated her last 8th grade class in 2022.  In addition to leading several DWS classes\, she also taught at the Urban Waldorf School in Milwaukee\, served as director of the Elementary teacher training program at the Waldorf Institute of Southeastern Michigan\, and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary literacy and urban education as professor of teacher education at Eastern Michigan University. The recipient of numerous teaching awards and fellowships. Linda is a frequent presenter and workshop leader\, including presenting on resilience at the 2023 International Teachers Conference at the Goetheanum. She is also a consultant and mentor teacher for the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America\, as well as for several Waldorf schools\, including on issues of diversity and inclusion\, as well as a member of Alma partners\, the AWSNA Board of Trustees\, the Pedagogical Section\, and the International Forum (Hague Circle). Linda earned her BA from Justin Morrill College at Michigan State University\, her MA in Waldorf Education from Mercy College\, and her doctorate in Curriculum\, Teaching\, and Educational Policy\, with a cognate in Literacy\, from Michigan State University. \n\n\n\nSchedule \nThis workshop takes place in live Zoom sessions. Sessions will not be recorded. \nSessions (All times are US EASTERN)\nFriday evening\, January 12: 7:00pm-8:30pm ET\nSaturday\, January 13: 10:30am-12pm and 12:30-2:00pm ET \nIn order to receive a Certificate of Attendance\, you must attend all three sessions.  \nCost \n$175 includes $25 non-refundable registration fee \nDiscount options  \n15% off for \n\nSchools sending more than one participant\, or\nSunbridge teacher education program graduates\, or\nPayments made in Canadian dollars\n\nFree for eligible current Sunbridge program students in good standing (plus a $25 non-refundable registration fee) \nDiscounts may not be combined. SUMMARY:Waldorf Weekend: Foundations and Fundamentals of Waldorf Education from Early Childhood through High School
DESCRIPTION:Open to students of education and especially relevant for new and prospective Waldorf community members (teachers\, parents and grandparents\, staffers\, and board members). \nOur lively and informative Waldorf Weekend workshop is designed to provide an experiential survey of the basis and basics of Waldorf education. In addition to exploring the Waldorf curriculum across the grades\, your workshop includes a discussion of Rudolf Steiner’s insights in human development and a look into the anthroposophical underpinnings of the Waldorf impulse. You’ll enjoy hands-on artistic activities and there’ll be plenty of time for questions and answers. Our Waldorf Weekends are a most memorable—and fun!—learning experience. \nThis workshop takes place in person.  \n  \nPresenters \nMeggan Gill ’10 became Sunbridge’s director of education and organizational culture in 2021 and is also a member of the Sunbridge teacher education faculty. A trained Waldorf early childhood educator and a specialist in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, Meggan is also a member of Alma Partners and is active in WECAN and AWSNA. Her teaching experience includes serving as lead toddler teacher at City of Lakes Waldorf School from 2020-21 and\, from 2009 to 2020\, serving on the faculty of the Brooklyn Waldorf School where she led parent-and-child and kindergarten classes and was active on the Faculty Council. Prior to joining BWS\, Meggan taught kindergarten at the Olympia Waldorf School and parent-and-child and nursery classes at the New Amsterdam School. She is also currently a Green Meadow Waldorf High School history teacher\, after having taken a class of Green Meadow students from first through eighth grade as class teacher. A former substitute teacher\, Winnie initially became interested in exploring the foundations and goals of education through a philosophical lens\, and discovered Waldorf education while seeking to answer the question “What kind of education helps to create a happy and healthy human being?” She holds a double-major BA in philosophy and education from Brooklyn College\, an MA in philosophy and education from Columbia University Teachers College\, a NYS teaching license in grades 1-6 education\, and her Waldorf teacher certification from Sunbridge Institute. \n\nPrevious Waldorf Weekend participants had this to say: \n~ The weekend has been wonderful. The information was communicated in a clear way\, and I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of what it means to look at the world through the Waldorf lens.\n~ It was excellent. The instructors were extremely knowledgeable.\n~ The weekend was outstanding! I was deeply inspired\, both as a teacher and as a human being.\n~ Highly informed\, warm-hearted facilitators with a deep concern for the group’s understanding and experience.\n~ This was one of the single most wonderful weekends in my life. I came with the intention of learning more about Waldorf education. I am leaving with a feeling of a shifting of my soul.\n~ This was a wonderful workshop\, and I highly recommend that everyone from teachers to parents take interest and reap the benefits. \n\n\n  \nSchedule \nFriday\, January 26: Check-in registration takes place from 6:30pm-6:50pm. SUMMARY:The Dynamics of Play: Exploring the Current State of Play & What the Pandemic Has Taught Us
DESCRIPTION:Conversations on the value of play in early childhood and early grades education have recently resurfaced\, along with growing concern over the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on all areas of child development. In two independent but related workshops (one presented online\, the other in person) for highly experienced\, currently practicing Waldorf early childhood educators and grades 1-3 teachers\, we will re-examine and begin recommitting to the essential role of play in education\, helping to inspire you to create therapeutic environments that foster healthy play for children from early childhood up to third grade. \nThe pandemic’s impact on children extends far beyond education. It has created a children’s mental health crisis leading to high rates of anxiety and depression among young people. Through an examination of theory and collaborative conversations\, this online workshop will explore how the pandemic impacted play in cultural practices while developing respectful family partnerships. Together we will: \n\nExamine myths about play\nConnect to contemporary research on play\nExplore a trauma-informed approach to play-based learning\n\nOpportunities for community learning will include facilitator presentations\, small group conversations\, individual reflections\, and artistic activities. \nFacilitators \nLisa Miccio provides mentoring and professional development to early childhood educators\, including as lead instructor of Sunbridge’s “Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education” Summer Series course. In 2023 she founded The Berry Basket playgroups and family programs in Warwick\, NY\, where she serves as director and parent & child playgroup teacher. From 2022-23 Lisa served Acorn Waldorf School as the Neighboring Tree Project Specialist\, overseeing a grant-funded AWS initiative that aimed to create community partnerships with local early childhood educators\, schools\, and centers. She taught kindergarten at The Waldorf School of Garden City\, where she chaired the DEIJ committee\, from 2017-2022\, and for a dozen years prior was on the faculty of Green Meadow Waldorf School\, where she taught in and served as a co-chair of the early childhood section\, directed the early childhood admissions and family programs\, and was a member of the Collegium\, the Collegium Committee\, and the Board of Trustees. Lisa’s teaching experience also includes teaching and mentoring in the Kathmandu (Nepal) Waldorf Kindergarten. A member of the Sunbridge Board since 2013\, she holds a BA in English from the College of Charleston\, an MS in Elementary Education from CW Post\, Long Island University\, and an MS in Waldorf Education from Sunbridge College. She is the mother of two Waldorf-educated sons. \n\n\nSondi Eugene is an early childhood teacher at the Waldorf School of Atlanta\, where she has been on the faculty since 2000; she has also been a guest instructor in Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program. Raised in rural New Jersey\, Sondi moved to Atlanta in 1994 and received her certificate in early childhood education from Sunbridge College 10 years later; she also graduated from the Lifeways Early Childhood and Human Development program and is certified as a Simplicity Parenting Group Leader. SUMMARY:The Dynamics of Play: Observing\, Understanding & Relating Play to Educational Objectives and the Foundations of Academic Achievement
DESCRIPTION:To promote accessibility\, this workshop is now taking place online.\nConversations on the value of play in early childhood and early grades education have recently resurfaced\, along with growing concern over the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on all areas of child development. In two independent\, but related\, workshops for highly experienced\, currently practicing Waldorf early childhood educators and grades 1-3 teachers\, we will re-examine and begin recommitting to the essential role of play in education\, helping to inspire you to create therapeutic environments that foster healthy play for children from early childhood up to third grade. \nAccording to the World Health Organization\, “To grow up healthy\, children need to sit less and play more.” As teachers of young children we are the guardians and defenders of their right to play. Through this workshop we will explore the relationship between play\, healthy brain development\, and the sequential social and cognitive capabilities that form the foundation for higher cognitive functions while connecting teacher observations to learning assessments\, developmental milestones\, and curriculum development. We will also examine: \n\nThe essential role of teachers in supporting play: lessons from nature-based preschools and kindergartens\nExploring the continuum of play-based learning from adult-child collaborative play to self-directed free play\nThe importance of risk-taking and nurturing resilience\n\nOpportunities for community learning will include facilitator presentations\, small group conversations\, individual reflections\, and artistic activities. \nFacilitators \nLisa Miccio provides mentoring and professional development to early childhood educators\, including as lead instructor of Sunbridge’s “Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education” Summer Series course. SUMMARY:Collaborative Leadership: Personalized Strategies for Becoming a More Effective Member of Your Leadership Team
DESCRIPTION:This course is now filled and is no longer accepting registration. Cancellations do occur\, so feel free to sign up on our waiting list if you wish to be in line for an opening.\nProfessional development for decision-makers—including administrators\, directors\, board and committee members\, and faculty chairs—working in Waldorf schools or other workplace settings. This course is taught remotely in real-time. Read about Summer Series 2024.  \n\nAre you shaping your organizational and leadership culture consciously or unconsciously? Do you have the skills necessary to recognize problems that might exist or arise within your workplace? And are you able to help your leadership team prioritize these issues and equip your fellow team members (and yourself) with the tools required to address them? \nFor over a decade\, Sunbridge’s Collaborative Leadership Summer Series course has helped individuals with leadership responsibilities in their school\, business\, or organization improve their planning and problem-solving processes. In this highly-useful course\, our focus is on the practical work of being a leader and decision-maker. Through a process imbued with the anthroposophical understanding of the human being\, and successfully applied in organizations from Waldorf schools to multi-million dollar nationals\, Collaborative Leadership will help you learn how to improve your effectiveness as a member of your leadership team. \nEach participant is asked to bring their own organizational question\, project\, or challenge. Using your real-life cases\, we will apply these four core models for collaborative leadership: \n\n\nThree main leadership tasks: Maintaining and creating identity / Creating space for healthy\, stable relationships / Assuring professional results\nDiagnostic and planning tools: How to look at an organization as a whole and understand the dynamics of intersecting segments\nHow to create processes toward healthy decision-making\nThe balance between power and trust\n\nYour course takeaway will be an individualized action plan for the question\, project\, or challenge you have brought with you\, along with an understanding of the necessary skill set with which to execute it. As always\, we encourage more than one attendee from a school so that they can work on a project together. \nBONUS: Ongoing coaching support! To support you as you implement throughout the year what you have learned and practiced during the summer\, this course includes conference calls facilitated by co-instructor Jessica Heffernan Ziegler scheduled from October through May. In these coaching conversations\, you and your classmates will continue to hone your collaborative leadership skills\, addressing and supporting one another’s progress and challenges—and so gain further insights\, understanding\, and expertise. \nInstructors \n Joachim Ziegler\, PhD\, has been working in the fields of organizational development and human resources development since 1994. A partner in MIRA Companions for Development\, an international consulting group\, Joachim’s current list of American and international clients encompasses the banking\, pharmaceutical\, retail\, and manufacturing sectors\, as well as anthroposophical institutions and Waldorf schools. Joachim is a member of the College of Social Sciences Section at the Goetheanum and the international Association for Social Development and has taught at the University of Muenster and at Germany’s first private university in Herdecke. He holds an MA in adult education and a PhD in medical education. \nJessica Heffernan Ziegler has been the executive director of Sunbridge Institute since 2008. Her professional focus on leadership skills\, governance issues\, and personnel development are utilized both in her executive director role and in her work as co-instructor of Sunbridge’s Collaborative Leadership course and related workshops; she also teaches Waldorf school administration in Sunbridge’s Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Education program and previously taught in Sunbridge College’s Administration and Biography programs. Jessica is a partner in MIRA Companions for Development\, an international consulting group\, and works as an executive coach and organizational development consultant for Waldorf administrators and teachers and other professionals in diverse institutions and schools in both the US and Germany. She served as the first administrator and as a board member at a Waldorf school she co-founded in Everswinkel\, Germany\, and has sat on many other boards\, including her current role as trustee for AWSNA\, for which she is also an active committee member and workshop presenter. Jessica holds a BS in business management and did her biography training with Karl-Heinz Finke and her executive coach training with SECA International. \nYour course also includes sessions on DEI topics with Meggan Gill of Sunbridge Institute and eurythmy with Alexandra Spadea of the Rudolf Steiner School. \n  \nHere’s what recent Summer Series Collaborative Leadership participants had to say about their experience: \n\nThe quality of the course was outstanding. Jessica and Joachim really made the information come alive and explained it in a way that was easy to digest. I really enjoyed when we had the opportunity to break out into smaller groups as it made for a more personal connection.\nJessica and Joachim just emanate warmth and knowledge in a space that is supportive\, inclusive and cares about our continued success. The charts and written materials provided in concert with the lectures and experiential work created a good depth and breadth with which to digest the information.\nMeggan brought a wealth of experience and created a safe space for validation of feelings around this important work. She is exceptionally skilled.\nI felt that Meggan covered a lot of material in an organized way. The subject is so vast and she has a great way of distilling it and allowing people a way in to examining our own relationship to it as a path to working with others.\nI love how practical the information is. There are plenty of actionable models and steps I can take within my own school. The portion I’ve enjoyed most was the one-on-one time I had with my talking partner (which) gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into a relationship with someone I found to be so helpful with her advice and perspectives.\nThe content has been very useful. As a school leader with a background in public education and passion for personal development\, I appreciated the weaving of Waldorf values partnered with practicality. I was able to apply the teachings in a faculty meeting the Thursday of our program and it went well\, the difference was felt and experienced by all.\nVery high quality. I found the lectures to be particularly helpful and insightful\, especially when paired with colleague Q&As.\nI found the pace and timing of each session – each a bit more intensive and deeper investigation of the collaborative leadership process – to be not only comfortable for my learning but also enlightening to me. It seemed like each day a new and brighter light shone on a concept I had experienced but never really seen before. Interspersing the break-out discussions in between each lecture was particularly satisfying to me because I find it helpful to learn in community\, dialoguing is a way to construct new meanings with others.\nI was extremely impressed with the intentions set to feel like a collaborative and connected classroom\, even in a virtual world.\nWith the classes being online\, it is perfect to have the start time where it was for those on either side of the continent.\nExcellent quality\, creative facilitators\, great tools\nThis course is the best one I have taken. It is balanced\, succinct\, realistic\, human and brings warmth to otherwise very cold and rigid themes. It went beyond my expectations!\nThe main highlight to me was how even though we all knew anthroposophy is underlying\, Steiner was mentioned a couple of times and that the mentions about anthroposophical institutions was from a human\, critical\, realistic standpoint.\nIt was worth the value and to have monthly calls included was just what I needed – super grateful that was included in the price.\n\n  \nSchedule \nThis course takes place July 21-26 in a synchronous online classroom \nALL TIMES LISTED ARE EASTERN (NY) TIME ZONE \nSunday evening\, July 21\n7:15 pm-7:25 pm: Log in for tech check and attendance\n7:30 pm-9:00 pm: First session \nMonday-Thursday\, July 22-25\n9:45 am-9:55 am: Log in for tech check and attendance\nSessions run from 10:00 am-4:30 pm\, with times for breaks and lunch\n\nFriday\, July 26\n9:45 am-9:55 am: Log in for tech check and attendance\nSessions run from 10:00 am-1:00 pm\, with mid-morning break \nNOTE: Participants should be prepared to work on course-related assignments outside of their regularly scheduled instructional sessions (including some that may be assigned in advance). SUMMARY:EC Insights
DESCRIPTION:This workshop series is now full and no longer accepting registration.\nA series of online\, topic-focused workshops for new and experienced Waldorf early childhood educators  \nSunbridge’s EC Insights workshop series creates opportunities for Waldorf early childhood teachers of all experience levels to gain new insights in a supportive circle of early childhood colleagues. Designed as a response to requests from early childhood educators who wish to continue conversations that begin in introductory courses or to deepen their understanding of Waldorf early childhood pedagogical themes\, each EC Insights lesson is supported with reading material and small assignments to further your practical work\, recognizing that there are many beginning teachers starting their school year with little professional support as they carry a full teaching load as well as veteran teachers with solid pedagogical experience who long for inspiration and revitalization. \nPresented virtually in six two-hour Saturday morning workshops taking place from October through May\, the series consists of the following sessions: \n\nSession 1 / October 19:  Reflections on Waldorf early childhood education and the present educational landscape\, including relationships\, partnerships\, and conversations with Waldorf-inspired and other early childhood movements\nSession 2 / November 2:  The interrelated dynamic between discipline\, relationships\, and developing one’s therapeutic eye\nSession 3 / January 4:  Developmental transitions during the first seven years and school readiness  \nSession 4 / March 1:  Balancing the inner and outer work in the art of teaching\nSession 5 / April 5: Exploring the growing nature-based early childhood educational movement \nSession 6 / May 3:  The science behind how and why children really learn through play    \n\nPraise from last year participants: \n“I thought the content and the way in which everything was presented was outstanding. The topics were relevant and thoughtful. I appreciated the thoughtfulness that was put into preparing for each topic and the amount of time for listening and break out rooms. I really thought it was stellar.” \n“The content… was highly relevant and applicable to my current teaching experience. I appreciated the research and anecdotes\, time for reflection and time for sharing. All of it filled the well from which I can draw!” \n“I wish it would continue!” \nFacilitators \nOur experienced and accomplished EC Insights faculty are committed lifelong learners who value the time and community required to continue learning\, updating\, enhancing and reflecting on their current knowledge and skills. Through active listening\, our faculty create opportunities for professional transformation and strengthening as they tune in to the questions and challenges that both new and veteran teachers face\, thereby supporting a respectful and collaborative community of learners interested in deep conversation and inquiry.  \nLisa Miccio (sessions 1-6) provides mentoring and professional development to early childhood educators\, including as a lead instructor of Sunbridge’s “Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education” Summer Series course. SUMMARY:Deepening the Picture of the Whole Child: Integrating Waldorf Wisdom with Current Sensory Integration Research
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This workshop is now full and registration is no longer being accepted. You are welcome to put your name on our waiting list in case of cancellation. \nAn online workshop series consisting of five two-hour Saturday sessions occurring from November through May for Waldorf early childhood and early grades teachers  \nBackground\nAt the 2023 Waldorf World Teachers’ conference held in Dornach\, Switzerland\, Dr. Karin Michael\, pediatrician and co-director of the section for anthroposophical medicine at the Goetheanum\, participated in a panel discussion of children’s developmental needs in our times. Questions were asked about children’s overall health in general and particularly what children need from educators in our post-pandemic world. Dr. Michael stated that children need intensified\, active physical movement to develop sensory health not only in the kindergarten years but up through grades 1\, 2\, and 3. The pandemic deprived children of many social\, sensory\, and movement experiences that they cannot “make up” without our help. \nWorkshop Description\nWaldorf education works with a picture of 12 senses. Mainstream research validates 9. Both streams include senses that tell us about our internal state\, senses that tell us about the external world\, and senses that we use in social interactions. The goal is that the senses will work together\, which is described as “sensory integration.” When there is disruption\, children will show their distress through perplexing and often challenging physical and social behaviors. In this 5-part workshop series\, designed for early childhood educators\, grades 1-3 teachers\, and others interested in deepening their understanding of how children grow into the world\, Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program co-director Nancy Blanning will serve as guide for an exploration into sensory development\, focusing on how the two streams of Waldorf education and mainstream research complement and confirm each other\, and how we can use this knowledge to better help the children in our care.  \nThe content of our sessions will concentrate on the body senses of touch\, self-movement\, and balance as foundation for physical\, academic\, emotional and social development to come. We will consider the gifts each sense brings to the child as well as what can be seen when the senses are not serving the child well. Our main focus will be in how to encourage typical development in general and to respond in supportive action to distressed sensing\, with the final session opening up a very introductory consideration of neurodiversity. We will look at how understanding of the senses can inform how we respond to and support children whose sensing systems and neurology are different. \nSession Topics \nNovember 2: The Landscape of the Senses—How does each sense help us live in the body\, in the external world\, and in the social world with other people? We will look at how we support the Life Sense/Interoception to assure comfort and a sense of security in the body. \nJanuary 4: Tactile/Touch Sense—Exploring hyper (extra reactive) and hypo (under reactive) responses as extreme edges of sensing touch. How do we recognize these and respond to these extremes? \nFebruary 1: Proprioceptive/Self-movement (Limbs\, muscles\, nerves\, and body-geography)—Exploring the balanced and extreme edges as shown in behavior. How can we offer invitation to strengthening this sense?  \nMarch 1: Vestibular/Balance—Orientation and security of the body in the three planes of space. How can we offer enriched opportunities to grow more secure balance? \nMay 3: Neurodiversity—A very beginning look at this increasing phenomenon in our children. How can what we learn about the senses help us in responding to these children with differences? \n  \nFacilitator \nNancy Blanning has co-directed Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program since 2015 and has served on its faculty since 1994. Now retired from a nearly forty-year career at The Denver Waldorf School\, where she served as a kindergarten teacher and member of the educational support staff\, Nancy’s main focus is therapeutic education with a special emphasis on developmental movement as supporting young children’s physical incarnation and sensory development.\n \nA frequent keynote speaker and presenter at national and international early childhood conferences and workshops\, including serving as a faculty member at Denver’s Nurturing the Roots Therapeutic Course\, Nancy’s writing credits include serving as contributor and editor of Gateways (the publication of WECAN); regular columnist for Lilipoh magazine; contributor to “You’re Not the Boss of Me” (WECAN publication)\, editor of WECAN’s First Grade Readiness; and co-author\, with Laurie Clark\, of Movement Journeys and Circle Adventures\, a collection of original movement imaginations for the classroom. Nancy holds a BA in English from the University of Colorado\, with teaching credentials. She also earned a certificate as Extra Lesson provider and therapeutic educator from Gradalis Seminars\, where she attended the four-year anthroposophical therapeutic/remedial training in Extra Lesson and supplementary therapies and academic support strategies. \n\nPrerequisite\nThis workshop is taught with the understanding that participants have a basic familiarity with the 12 senses as described in Waldorf education. Required reading preparation is the WECAN publication\, Nurturing the Senses: The Importance of Authentic Sensory Experiences in Early Childhood\, which can be purchased for $9.00.  \nAdditional recommended reading includes: \n\nWilli Aeppli’s Care and Development of the Human Senses\n\n\nSharifa Oppenheimer’s With Stars in Their Eyes\n\n\nSally Goddard Blythe\, The Well-Balanced Child\n\nTitles are available from online booksellers. The first two are carried by Steinerbooks.com \n  \nSchedule\nSessions take place over Zoom from 1:30 pm–3:30 pm (Eastern/NY Time) on the following Saturdays:\nNovember 2 / January 4 / February 1/ March 1 / May 3 \nSessions will not be recorded. \nCost \nEarly Bird pricing (register by October 25 and save $25!): $370\nRegular pricing (register after October 25): $395\nPrices includes a $25 non-refundable registration fee \nNote: This workshop is presented as a series; individual sessions may not be signed up for separately. Refunds will not be issued for sessions not attended. See registration form for full refund policy.  \nRegistrants who sign up for both Deepening the Picture of the Whole Child as well as EC Insights\, our workshop series held earlier in the day on many of the same Saturday dates\, will receive a discounted price ($700 Early Bird\, $725 regular) for both. Participants choosing this option may not apply any other discount\, with the exception of CAD payments. \n\nAvailable Discounts\n25% off for: \n\nSchools sending 2 or more participants\nSunbridge teacher education program graduates\nPayments made in Canadian dollars\n\nDiscounts may not be combined. Qualification for discounts will be verified by Sunbridge staff.  \nIf you are a Sunbridge Early Childhood program student and wish to attend this workshop\, please contact Nancy for information before registering.  \n  \nNOTE: This workshop is now full and registration is no longer being accepted. SUMMARY:Four Core Elements of Successful Leadership
DESCRIPTION:A two-part\, online workshop for decision-makers—including administrators\, directors\, board and committee members\, and faculty and section chairs—working in Waldorf schools or other workplace settings \n  \nInspiring\, Guiding\, Coaching\, and Intervening:  \nThese four core skills and tasks—what we need to become proficient in as leaders—are the focus of our latest Collaborative Leadership workshop. Over two weekends and through presentation\, large and small group discussion\, sharing\, and journaling\, under the direction of facilitators Jessica Heffernan Ziegler and Joachim Ziegler\, PhD\, in this workshop we will: \n\nDefine these leadership elements\, both as skill sets and tasks\, and illuminate their importance and the role each plays as we carry out our roles as leaders\nExplore our own level of comfort with each element\nGain an initial understanding of what types of situations call for which skill\, and the necessity to adapt our approach to most effectively meet that person or situation\nImprove our own competencies and capacities in all four skills and tasks\n\nWhile all four leadership elements will be explored over the course of the workshop\, the element of intervening—often the most difficult task for us and other leaders in our schools—will be the primary focus of our second weekend. Intervening depends just as much on our organization’s governance structure (both formal and\, especially\, informal) and clarity of roles and responsibilities (methods of accountability) as it does on our understanding of our mandated roles and responsibilities. \n\n\n  \nSchedule \nFriday\, January 24: Check-in registration takes place from 6:30pm-6:50pm.
