SUMMARY:Singing and Dancing Together in Grades 1-6: Musical Activities for Your Class
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for Waldorf class\, music\, and movement teachers and homeschool parents \nThis workshop will have you singing and dancing through the grades 1-6 curricula all weekend long\, as you learn and practice musical activities to bring to your students. Discover how to enliven your morning circle time with singing games that build community and coordination and bring joyful movement to your class\, and how to use these singing games to enhance your class plays and deepen the experience of your geography and history blocks. \nIn addition to American folk music\, the songs and dances you’ll learn will offer your students a breadth of diverse cultural riches\, brought to you by a teacher who has done extensive research into dances of many cultures. These activities can bring new depth and life to your teaching in a way that only music and movement can! \nTogether we’ll address child development questions and ways to work with the curriculum as you use these activities to support your work in the classroom. You’ll come away with copies of all of the songs and resources for finding more. \nRecording devices are welcome; videos will require consent of the group. \nInstructor \nJana Hawley directs Sunbridge’s Elementary Teacher Education program and specialized intensives in Elementary Music and Grades 1-12 World Language teaching. In addition to being a master adult education teacher\, Jana is a highly experienced class and music teacher and is a longtime faculty member of Green Meadow Waldorf School\, where she currently teaches lower school music and singing and is lower school chair and co-chair of the Festival Committee. Previously\, she spent 14 years on the faculty of the Whidbey Island Waldorf School\, teaching music and main lessons. \nJana has been a visiting faculty member at several Waldorf teacher training institutes in the US as well as at institutes abroad\, including China and Australia. She has led workshops in movement\, singing\, and composition\, and is a contributor to The Mood of the Fifth: A Musical Approach to Early Childhood\, a WECAN publication. Jana earned her BFA in Music from Cornish College of the Arts\, Seattle\, WA\, and her MSEd in Waldorf Elementary Teacher Education from Sunbridge College. \nSchedule\nFriday\, June 29: 6:30-7pm registration. SUMMARY:Watercolor Painting in the Early Grades: Creative Inspiration and Practical Techniques for Painting in Grades 1-3
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for teachers and homeschool parents \nJoin a master teacher in exploring watercolor painting in the early grades! \nIn this highly experiential\, two-day workshop you will learn\, create in\, and practice the medium of watercolor painting. We’ll explore ways to introduce the language of color into the early grades curricula as you work on seasonal themes\, curriculum inspirations\, color dialogues\, painting techniques\, and the important practical work of set up and clean up with children. \nFirst and second grade paintings will lead you into third grade creation themes\, where you will learn how to layer colors to achieve darkness\, and how to bring color into form. Through the process you’ll discover how to allow shapes and elements to emerge\, including light\, fire\, and earth; sun\, moon\, and stars; plants\, birds\, fishes\, and animals; and the human being itself. \nTakeaways will include: \n\nFacility with the primary\, secondary\, and tertiary colors\, including color dominance versus harmony\, and balancing with complimentary colors\nCreating color dialogues\nThe painting process\, including wetting the paper\, holding the brush\, brush strokes\, and set up and clean up with children\nWays to establish a mood in your classroom conducive to an artistic process\n\nYour takeaway will be the paintings you produce and a newfound knowledge and inspiration for creating watercolor painting with your class. \nInstructor \nRenate Kurth is a longtime Waldorf educator and beloved master teacher. Renate’s Waldorf teaching career began in the Toronto Waldorf School in the 1970s; in the 1980s\, she was part of the founding group—and the first administrator—of Toronto’s Waldorf Academy. In 2011 she retired after decades of serving on the faculty of Green Meadow Waldorf School where she took several classes from first through eighth grades and taught high school chemistry. Since then\, she continues to teach and lecture on Waldorf Education. SUMMARY:Techniques and Skills for Creating Beautiful Drawings in the Grades: A Focus on Chalkboards and Main Lesson Books
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for Waldorf teachers and homeschooling parents  \nIn this workshop\, grades 1-8 class and subject teachers will receive instruction in the basics of how to create beautiful chalkboard drawings and how to approach Main Lesson book drawings across the Waldorf lower and middle school curricula. Regardless of your artistic background\, you’ll leave with valuable skills\, new-found confidence\, and ideas for projects to bring to your class. \nUsing curricular themes\, we will cover: \n• Useful techniques for drawing with chalk\n• Applying perspective drawing techniques to illustrations\n• Employing geometry and proportion\n• Drawing the human figure\n• Methods for teaching children how to lay out a page \nNOTE: This workshop is taught with the expectation that you have a background in Waldorf Education.  \nNOTE: This workshop is filled. Before becoming a Waldorf educator\, he was a teacher in New York City. You will learn about scope and sequence in your planning\, curriculum development\, and assessment. He has been with this class—a combined class by design—since they were in first grade. A member of the Ashwood faculty since 2006\, Jeremy graduated his eighth grade class there in 2011; previously\, he worked at Lake Champlain Waldorf School. Jeremy holds a BA in psychology with a Spanish minor from Northern Arizona University and earned his Waldorf certificate and master’s of education degree from Antioch New England. DESCRIPTION:Professional development for early childhood educators and section heads \nIn this course we will explore the social life of the early childhood section\, illuminating important themes and common obstacles that prevent harmonious collegial work. SUMMARY:Managing Your Year in the Classroom: Tools and Skills for Effective Organization\, Planning\, and Communication
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for Waldorf teachers and homeschool parents \nThis highly practical workshop will give you the tools and framework you need to proactively manage your year in the classroom. Using Rudolf Steiner’s lecture “Practical Training in Thought” as a launching point\, together we will explore the executive functions and skills that enable us to effectively plan\, focus our attention\, juggle multiple tasks\, and set goals and priorities. \nYour workshop will cover methods for: \n• Planning your lessons\n• Organizing your materials\n• Making classroom notes\n• Time management\n• Effective record-keeping \nSome class time will be given to discuss communication with parents and report writing. \nYou will leave with strategies and tools that can effectively support your success in preparing for the upcoming year. \n  \nInstructor \nKelly Beekman is fourth grade class teacher at the Brooklyn Waldorf School. Prior to joining the Brooklyn faculty in 2016\, she was a member of the faculty for nine years at The Waldorf School of Garden City\, where she served as a class teacher\, mentor\, and lower school chair\, and where her ability to plan\, organize\, and maintain a high level of executive functioning skills\, within both her personal class preparation and her classes themselves\, were highly recognized. Previously\, she served as a Board trustee at The Clover Hill School and as business administrator at The Linden Hill School. A longtime student of anthroposophy\, Kelly is a member of the Anthroposophical Society and the First Class of the School of Spiritual Science and the Pedagogical Section. She completed her teacher training at Antioch New England. \nAttendees who took a previous Summer Series workshop with Kelly had this to say: \n– Kelly was knowledgeable\, organized and prepared! SUMMARY:Collaborative Leadership: Personalized Strategies for Becoming a More Effective Member of Your Leadership Team
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for decision-makers—including administrators\, directors\, board and committee members\, and faculty chairs—working in Waldorf schools or other workplace settings \nNo matter what your position or title is\, if you participate in a planning or problem-solving process in your school\, business\, or organization\, you have leadership responsibilities. In this highly-useful course\, our focus is on the practical work of being a leader and decision-maker. Through a process imbued with the anthroposophical understanding of the human being\, and successfully applied in organizations from multi-million dollar nationals to Waldorf schools\, Collaborative Leadership will help you learn how to improve your effectiveness as a member of your leadership team. \nEach participant is asked to bring to the course his or her own organizational question\, project\, or challenge. Using your real-life cases\, we will apply these four core models for collaborative leadership: \n\nThree main leadership tasks: Maintaining and creating identity / Creating space for healthy\, stable relationships / Assuring professional results\nDiagnostic and planning tools: How to look at an organization as a whole and understand the dynamics of intersecting segments\nHow to create processes toward healthy decision-making\nThe balance between power and trust\n\nYour course takeaway will be an individualized action plan for the question\, project\, or challenge you have brought with you\, along with an understanding of the necessary skill set with which to execute it. \nBONUS: Ongoing coaching support! To support you as you implement throughout the year what you have learned and practiced during the summer\, this course includes conference calls facilitated by co-instructor Jessica Heffernan Ziegler scheduled from October through May. In these one-and-a-half-hour-long coaching conversations\, you and your classmates will continue to hone your collaborative leadership skills\, addressing and supporting one another’s progress and challenges—and so gain further insights\, understanding\, and expertise. \nInstructors \n Joachim Ziegler\, PhD\, has been working in the fields of Organizational Development and Human Resources Development since 1994. A partner in MIRA\, an international group of consultants\, Joachim’s current list of American and international clients encompasses the banking\, pharmaceutical\, retail\, and manufacturing sectors\, as well as anthroposophical institutions and Waldorf schools. Joachim is a member of the College of Social Sciences Section at the Goetheanum and the international Association for Social Development and has taught at the University of Muenster and at Germany’s first private university in Herdecke. He holds an MA in Adult Education and a PhD in Medical Education. \nJessica Heffernan Ziegler has been the Executive Director of Sunbridge Institute since 2008; previously\, she taught collaboration and group dynamics in Sunbridge College’s Administration\, Biography\, and Elementary Teacher Education programs. Jessica has worked as an executive coach and organizational development consultant for Waldorf school administrators and teachers\, as well as other professionals\, since 2004\, consulting in diverse institutions and schools in both the US and Germany with a focus on governance issues\, personnel development\, and leadership skills. She was also co-founder\, administrator\, and Board member of a Waldorf school in Everswinkel\, Germany\, is a partner in MIRA Companions for Development\, an international consulting group\, and sits on the boards of Manhattan’s Rudolf Steiner School and the Otto Specht School in Chestnut Ridge\, NY.
