Read Summer Series 2023 details here.  \nThis course offers you an invaluable opportunity to focus entirely on your upcoming third grade school year in five days brimming with presentations\, discussions\, and practical activities. \nUnder the guidance of an experienced class teacher\, you’ll discover ways to enliven your teaching and how to approach the blocks so that they may meet the third grader in a deep and meaningful way. With the insights of anthroposophy\, gleaned through a look at child development focusing specifically on your class’s age group\, you will get to know the third grade child in depth as they as they experience the nine-year change. \nAlong with time and space to consider and hone your skills in such practical matters as main lesson books\, block planning\, projects and activities\, and classroom management\, your course will include such key topics for third graders—and their teachers—as: \n\nMulticultural approaches to the creation stories and the role of Old Testament stories in the third grade curriculum\nTopics in language arts\, reading groups\, and class plays\nTopics in math\nThird grade approach to science and gardening\nThird grade approach to social studies\, class trips and community service\nThird grade morning circle\nThird grade assessment\nParent work and colleagueship\n\nIn addition to inspiration and guidance which will support your teaching throughout the year\, you’ll gain many invaluable opportunities for building connections among a community of parallel colleagues from across the country\, to carry with you into your teaching. \nGrade-specific resource materials useful for your year\, including poems\, songs\, stories\, and main lesson book ideas\, will be provided to you electronically. \nNOTE: This course is taught with the expectation that you have a foundational background in Waldorf education. \n  \nLead Instructor \nJoshua Gartland is on the faculty of  The Waldorf School of Atlanta\, where he has been a class teacher since 2009. Before joining WSA\, he taught at The Waldorf School of Garden City. Prior to becoming a Waldorf teacher\, Josh was active in theatre productions\, studied and performed as a mime\, and was a senior manager of one of the largest yoga facilities in the country. He received a BFA in Theater Performance from Wright State University in Dayton\, Ohio\, and his diploma in Waldorf education from Sunbridge College.  Josh enjoys talking\, books\, playing games\, singing\, dancing\, drawing and\, of course\, learning. \nLast year’s Summer Series Grade Three participants had this to say: \n\nIt went above and beyond my expectations\, especially with regard to concrete tools\, the community created and resources shared.\nI love the Google Classroom and the ability to share resources\, as well as practical examples and ideas for my classroom. \nThe outline of the week hit on almost all the topics I was seeking information about.\nI thought the content was extremely helpful\, the Google classroom will be an tremendous help throughout the year.\nThis was so wonderful. Melissa has served her school as grades department chair\, pedagogical chair\, Leadership Council member and Council rep to the Board of Trustees\, and as an AWSNA delegate. In addition to her 20 years on the SWS faculty\, Melissa’s extensive teaching experience also includes serving as an elementary and middle school teacher for public schools in Florida and Idaho\, and teaching at Department of Defense schools in Germany and at Sylvan Learning Centers in Florida and Pennsylvania. Melissa earned her BA in elementary education and art history from Rollins College and her MEd degree from the University of Central Florida. We are happy to welcome her to Sunbridge. \nLast year’s Summer Series Grade Four participants had this to say: \n\nAs a rank beginner\, I found all of the information practical and helpful. Such an abundance!\nI was extremely satisfied with the course material and instruction. SUMMARY:Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education: An Immersion in the World of the Waldorf Nursery / Kindergarten

Details here.  \nOpen to everyone\, including current and prospective early childhood educators\, parents\, grandparents\, and caregivers. \nJoin us for a wondrous journey! In this comprehensive course\, you’ll explore the essential elements of Waldorf early childhood education. Through the guidance of highly experienced Waldorf early childhood educators you’ll delve into child development; learn about rhythms\, transitions\, and the cycle of the year; explore the importance of play; examine the inner development of the teacher; experience circle time activities\, lessons in handwork\, art\, and movement\, and the essentials of a morning in a Waldorf early childhood setting; and develop a true practical understanding of Waldorf early childhood education. A perennial Sunbridge summer favorite\, this rich and extensive course has launched many early childhood careers. \nYou may also be interested in EC Insights\, our new online companion course taking place over the ‘23-24 academic year and open to anyone who has taken Introduction to Waldorf Early Childhood Education. \n  \nInstructors \nLisa Miccio\, lead\, joined Acorn Waldorf School in September 2022 as the Neighboring Tree Project (NTP) Specialist\, overseeing a grant-funded AWS initiative that aims to create community partnerships with local early childhood educators\, schools\, and centers; at the School\, she also provides professional development training and mentoring of teachers new to nature-based early childhood education. A Sunbridge Board trustee\, Lisa taught kindergarten at The Waldorf School of Garden City from 2017-2022\, where she chaired the DEIJ committee. Prior to joining the WSGC faculty\, she was on the faculty of Green Meadow Waldorf School for a dozen years\, where she taught kindergarten and parent and child classes\, served as a co-chair of the early childhood section\, director of early childhood admissions and family programs\, and was a member of the Collegium\, the Collegium Committee\, and the Board of Trustees. Lisa’s teaching experience also includes working at Mountain Laurel Waldorf School\, Dayspring Community School\, and\, during her 2016-17 sabbatical\, teaching and mentoring in the Kathmandu (Nepal) Waldorf Kindergarten. She holds a BA in English from the College of Charleston\, an MS in Elementary Education from CW Post\, Long Island University\, and an MS in Waldorf Education from Sunbridge College. \n \nMotria Shuhan is the founder/director of Acorn Waldorf School\, a full WECAN member in Accord\, NY\, where she serves as lead teacher in the Oaks Mixed Age Kindergarten. Prior to Founding AWS\, she spent nine formative years at the Mountain Laurel Waldorf School\, working in the nursery and kindergarten and serving as pedagogical chair for three years. Motria also serves as a mentor and educator in Sunbridge’s Early Childhood Teacher Education program. With a special interest in the art of puppetry\, Motria has staged shows for conferences\, festivals\, and other community events. She completed a three-year Advanced Therapeutic Course for Early Childhood Educators in Denver and her Waldorf Early Childhood training at Sunbridge College. \n \nMeggan Gill became Sunbridge’s director of education and organizational culture in 2021 and is also a member of the Sunbridge teacher education faculty. A specialist in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, she is also a trained Waldorf early childhood educator and is active in WECAN and AWSNA. Meggan’s teaching experience includes most recently serving as lead toddler teacher at City of Lakes Waldorf School and\, from 2009 to 2020\, serving on the faculty of the Brooklyn Waldorf School where she led parent-and-child and kindergarten classes and was active on the Faculty Council. Prior to joining BWS\, Meggan taught kindergarten at the Olympia Waldorf School and parent-and-child and nursery classes at the New Amsterdam School. Meggan earned her undergraduate degree in health sciences from The Evergreen State College and her certificate in Waldorf early childhood education from Sunbridge. \nRie Seo teaches kindergarten at The Waldorf School of Garden City. Before joining the WSGC faculty\, Rie served as the aftercare lead teacher at New Amsterdam School. She also led nursery and parent/child programs at a Waldorf-inspired Japanese Saturday Program in Brooklyn and was the founder and lead teacher for outdoor Waldorf-inspired parent/child classes in Queens. A graduate of Sunbridge’s Early Childhood teacher training\, Rie also earned her BA in drama from Tamagawa University in Tokyo\, Japan\, her MFA in theater design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts\, and a certificate in early childhood education from LifeWays. \n  \nParticipants who took this course previously had this to say: \n\nThe Intro to EC course exceeded my expectations. \nAn amazing mix of hands-on experience\, interactive group work\, and lecture content.\nIt was well structured\, the faculty was exceptional and held each class with knowledge\, joy and humor. Previously\, she took a class from sixth-eighth grade at Green Meadow Waldorf School. A graduate of the College of William and Mary\, Rebecca discovered Waldorf education while studying Mayan archaeology at Tulane University\, from which she earned an MA in Anthropology. She also holds an MSEd in Waldorf elementary education from Sunbridge College. \nSummer Series 2022 participants had this to say about their experience with Rebecca: \n\nRebecca’s passion for teaching is the most inspiring thing… and that’s saying a lot! because content was great\nRebecca was wonderful! So experienced\, insightful and left time for comments and questions.\nRebecca’s recommendations were modern and deep. I really appreciated her book recommendations and how many resources she shared in the google drive. I will be using them throughout the year and they will help shape my year and make it easier.\nRebecca was open\, honest\, organized\, professional. And do you have the skills necessary to recognize problems that might exist or arise within your workplace\, help your leadership team prioritize these issues\, and equip them (and yourself) with the tools to address them? \nIn this highly-useful course\, our focus is on the practical work of being a leader and decision-maker. Through a process imbued with the anthroposophical understanding of the human being\, and successfully applied in organizations from Waldorf schools to multi-million dollar nationals\, Collaborative Leadership will help you learn how to improve your effectiveness as a member of your leadership team. \nEach participant is asked to bring their own organizational question\, project\, or challenge. Using your real-life cases\, we will apply these four core models for collaborative leadership: \n\n\nThree main leadership tasks: Maintaining and creating identity / Creating space for healthy\, stable relationships / Assuring professional results\nDiagnostic and planning tools: How to look at an organization as a whole and understand the dynamics of intersecting segments\nHow to create processes toward healthy decision-making\nThe balance between power and trust\n\nYour course takeaway will be an individualized action plan for the question\, project\, or challenge you have brought with you\, along with an understanding of the necessary skill set with which to execute it. Joachim is a member of the College of Social Sciences Section at the Goetheanum and the international Association for Social Development and has taught at the University of Muenster and at Germany’s first private university in Herdecke. He holds an MA in adult education and a PhD in medical education. \nJessica Heffernan Ziegler has been the executive director of Sunbridge Institute since 2008. Her professional focus on leadership skills\, governance issues\, and personnel development are utilized both in her executive director role and in her work as co-instructor of Sunbridge’s Collaborative Leadership course and related workshops; she also teaches Waldorf school administration in Sunbridge’s Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Education program and previously taught in Sunbridge College’s Administration and Biography programs. Jessica is a partner in MIRA Companions for Development\, an international consulting group\, and works as an executive coach and organizational development consultant for Waldorf administrators and teachers and other professionals in diverse institutions and schools in both the US and Germany. Read Summer Series 2023 details here. \nThis anthroposophically-based\, hands-on course with longtime science teacher Gary Banks explores the phenomena-based approach to teaching science used in Waldorf schools. The intention of this week is to deepen the teacher’s connection with science and explore how these exciting topics can be brought to the students in a way that develops joy and enthusiasm.   \nThrough looking at common natural phenomena and learning to think about them in a living way\, we can develop capacities as teachers that will deepen our approach to teaching science main lessons and lessons in other subject areas as well. Over the course of your week\, we will observe some of the key phenomena from grades 6-8 and practice observation\, letting go of our preconceptions\, and bringing conversations to students with language that is true to what we experience. \nYour course includes: \n\nAn overview of the main science topics in middle school science\, grades 6-8\nPerforming and observing a few key experiments from the many exciting topics in grades 6-8\, giving you a sense of how to create demonstrations and hands-on experiences that will serve the middle school student and to have a sense for how a topic develops over three years\nSharing ideas about how students may record the experiences they observe in class\nReviewing the experiences we observe together in the way a teacher would do with students\, deepening the participant’s relationship to these topics and gaining confidence in how to conduct lessons in a two-day rhythm of observation and concept development\nDiscussions around  the middle school student and how they are served by this method\n\n\nInstructor \nGary Banks is a founding core faculty member of Sunbridge’s Waldorf High School Teacher Education program\, and high school faculty chair and high school math and science teacher at the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor\, where he has been on the faculty since 2007 and where he is a member of the School’s College of Teachers and a Board trustee. He is also a presenter in the Teaching Sensible Science course and has taught in a number of teacher training programs and foundation studies courses. From 1993-2001\, Gary took a class from first to eighth grade at the Denver Waldorf School\, and then worked as a high school science teacher at High Mowing School and a class teacher at Pine Hill Waldorf School before moving to Michigan. Gary earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering and worked as a research engineer on the NASA Space Station project before entering teaching.
