SUMMARY:Techniques and Skills for Creating Beautiful Drawings in the Grades: A Focus on Chalkboards and Main Lesson Books
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for Waldorf teachers and homeschooling parents  \nIn this workshop\, grades 1-8 class and subject teachers will receive instruction in the basics of how to create beautiful chalkboard drawings and how to approach Main Lesson book drawings across the Waldorf lower and middle school curricula. Regardless of your artistic background\, you’ll leave with valuable skills\, new-found confidence\, and ideas for projects to bring to your class. \nUsing curricular themes\, we will cover: \n• Useful techniques for drawing with chalk\n• Applying perspective drawing techniques to illustrations\n• Employing geometry and proportion\n• Drawing the human figure\n• Methods for teaching children how to lay out a page \nNOTE: This workshop is taught with the expectation that you have a background in Waldorf Education.  \nNOTE: This workshop is filled. You may join our wait list for possible cancellations.\nInstructor \nSteve Simonak is currently fifth grade class teacher at Brooklyn Waldorf School. Prior to coming to Brooklyn in 2016\, Steve was a longtime faculty member at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School; during his 26 years there\, he served as a class and high school teacher\, middle school math and arts teacher\, and Council of Teachers chairperson. Before becoming a Waldorf educator\, he was a teacher in New York City. Steve who holds a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute\, received his Waldorf Teaching Certificate from the Alkion Center (for which he is a contributing faculty member)\, and has training in Foundation Studies from Antioch. Steve’s hobbies include medieval Christian painting\, New York State history\, gardening\, birdwatching\, and bird photography. \n  \nYour workshop also includes singing with Patti Regan of the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School. \nSchedule\nFriday\, July 13: 6:30-7pm registration. Class runs from 7pm-9pm\nSaturday\, July 14: Classes run from 9am-5:30pm\, with time for breaks and lunch.\nSunday\, July 15: Classes run from 9am-1pm\, with mid-morning break.\n  \nFee\n$345 (includes all materials and non-refundable $30 registration fee). \nDiscount Options \n10% discounts on subsequent registrations (of equal or lesser value) automatically appear on your registration form when selecting more than one title. (Exception: Waldorf Weekend\, which offers an $80 discount when selected as a subsequent registration.) \nCurrently enrolled Sunbridge program students receive a 30% discount and Sunbridge program graduates receive a 15% discount (not to be combined with any other offering). Discount instructions will appear on the registration form after you answer questions about your Sunbridge background in the Participant Profile section. (Account must be in good standing.)  \nSchools making 11 registrations for any combination of 2\,3 and/or 5-day offerings will be rebated one tuition of the least expensive offering. SUMMARY:Numeracy in the Early Grades: Strengthening Your Teaching of Arithmetic in Grades 1-3
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for Waldorf teachers and homeschool parents.\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThis weekend workshop offers teachers guidance and practical resources to help their students establish a meaningful relationship to numbers that will serve them as a lively foundation for future learning. \n\n\nYou will discover how to incorporate movement\, imagination\, and practice as you guide your students toward fluency and confidence with the four processes. You will learn about scope and sequence in your planning\, curriculum development\, and assessment. Games\, movement\, and creative ideas will abound as this workshop opens up the world of arithmetic in the early grades for your students.\n\n\n\n  \nTakeaways will include: \n\nBroadening your understanding of how the math curriculum unfolds through the grades\nDiscovering how helpful movement activities can support your teaching and your students’ learning\nLearning to love math\, if you don’t already\nLearning how to foster confidence in your students\nKnowing how to find helpful resources for your work\n\n  \nInstructor \nJeremy Clough is class teacher for mixed grades five-six at Ashwood Waldorf School in  Rockport\, Maine. He has been with this class—a combined class by design—since they were in first grade. A member of the Ashwood faculty since 2006\, Jeremy graduated his eighth grade class there in 2011; previously\, he worked at Lake Champlain Waldorf School. Jeremy holds a BA in psychology with a Spanish minor from Northern Arizona University and earned his Waldorf certificate and master’s of education degree from Antioch New England. SUMMARY:Working Together in the Early Childhood Section: Addressing Practical Questions and Social Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Professional development for early childhood educators and section heads \nIn this course we will explore the social life of the early childhood section\, illuminating important themes and common obstacles that prevent harmonious collegial work. Through group presentations\, break-out discussions\, journaling\, and film\, we will address three main areas of focus: \nLead/assistant relationships: \n\nIdentifying professional expectations\nDefining clarity of roles\nEstablishing clear communication\nExploring the unique experience of working with an assistant—or as an assistant—and the accompanying gifts and challenges\nIdeas for nurturing and strengthening the relationship\n\n  \nRacial diversity: \n\nTaking active\, concrete steps toward recognizing where you are and where you want to be\nConsciously interfacing and communicating with the school community and beyond\nEstablishing a foundation for understanding Race as a social construct in America\nCultivating an active interest in the other\n\n  \nConflict and collaboration: \n\nWorking with flexibility and creativity\nRecognizing different ways of doing the “right” thing\n\n  \nYou will come away with: \n\nClarity around supporting healthy professional relationships in the early childhood classroom\nStrategies for identifying\, communicating\, and rectifying challenging relationships\nHelpful strategies toward healthy collaboration\nIncreased confidence in being able to discuss issues of Race and Racism\n\n  \nInstructor  \nKeelah Helwig is a kindergarten teacher and early childhood chair at The Waldorf School of Garden City\, her alma mater. She is also a Garden City Board Trustee and chair of her school’s Diversity Committee. Keelah started her Waldorf early childhood career in Garden City in 2006 as kindergarten assistant in the school’s new early childhood program.
