Numeracy in the Early Grades: Strengthening Your Teaching of Arithmetic in Grades 1-3

Friday, July 13, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - Sunday, July 15, 2018 @ 1:00 pm

Professional development for Waldorf teachers and homeschool parents.

This weekend workshop offers teachers guidance and practical resources to help their students establish a meaningful relationship to numbers that will serve them as a lively foundation for future learning.

You will discover how to incorporate movement, imagination, and practice as you guide your students toward fluency and confidence with the four processes. You will learn about scope and sequence in your planning, curriculum development, and assessment. Games, movement, and creative ideas will abound as this workshop opens up the world of arithmetic in the early grades for your students.

Takeaways will include:

  • Broadening your understanding of how the math curriculum unfolds through the grades
  • Discovering how helpful movement activities can support your teaching and your students’ learning
  • Learning to love math, if you don’t already
  • Learning how to foster confidence in your students
  • Knowing how to find helpful resources for your work

Instructor

Jeremy Clough is class teacher for mixed grades five-six at Ashwood Waldorf School in  Rockport, Maine. He has been with this class—a combined class by design—since they were in first grade. A member of the Ashwood faculty since 2006, Jeremy graduated his eighth grade class there in 2011; previously, he worked at Lake Champlain Waldorf School. Jeremy holds a BA in psychology with a Spanish minor from Northern Arizona University and earned his Waldorf certificate and master’s of education degree from Antioch New England. He loves math and movement—making numeracy in the younger grades one of his favorite subjects—and is also an avid outdoorsman, gardener, and traveler.

Your workshop also includes singing with Patti Regan of the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School.
