Approaching Grade Eight: Inspiration and Guidance

Sunday, July 10, 2016 - Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Grade 8Summer Series 2016 course with instructor Steve Simonak of Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School

Professional development for Waldorf teachers and homeschooling parents

This course offers you an invaluable opportunity to focus entirely on your upcoming eighth grade school year, in a condensed, three-day format filled with discussions, presentations, and practical activities. With the insights of anthroposophy, gleaned through a daily  look at child development focusing specifically on your students’ age group, you will get to know the eighth grader in depth, as he or she stands at the point of inner revolution. Under the guidance of an experienced class teacher, you’ll discover ways to enliven your teaching and how to approach the blocks so that they may meet the eighth grader in a deep and meaningful way. There will be time and space to consider and hone your skills in such practical matters as main lesson books, block planning, projects and activities, and classroom management.

In addition to inspiration and guidance which will support your teaching throughout the year, you will gain many invaluable opportunities for building connections among a community of parallel colleagues from across the country, to carry with you into your teaching.

Your course will include key eighth grade topics in the sciences, mathematics and geometry, and the humanities. These subjects will be supported by explorations in the arts, giving you practical tools to take into your school year.

A useful grade-specific Resource Notebook, including poems, songs, stories, and main lesson book ideas, will be provided to you when you arrive on campus.

NOTE: This course is taught with the expectation that you have a background in Waldorf Education.

(Should you wish to further expand your artistic experience, you may choose to register also for Techniques and Skills for Creating Beautiful Drawings, our 2-day skills-based workshop for grades teachers held immediately following your course.)

Students who took a Grades course with Steve in summer 2015 had this to say:

~ Steve is one of the best teachers I know.

~ Steve is so receptive to the needs of the group. We stuck to the course as outlined, but were also given plenty of time for what the group seemed to need.

~ Lighthearted, informative, and real.

~ Steve was wonderful! His passion for teaching is clear and inspiring, and he left lots of room for questions from all of us.

~ So practical and useful. I’m leaving with a huge basket of ideas and inspiration.
