High School Teacher Education Weekend: October 25-26, 2024

Friday, October 25, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - Saturday, October 26, 2024 @ 4:45 pm

For the first time, Sunbridge’s High School Teacher Education program is opening its online weekend classes to (non-matriculated) high school teachers looking for professional development.

To kick off this opportunity, interested individuals are invited to join our High School Teacher Education students at their October 25-26 weekend for the following Zoom classes:

200 A Principles and Methods
Foundations of Human Experience, Lecture 11. Rudolf Steiner
Instructor: Gary Banks
Program students began a study of Steiner’s first course for teachers last summer, and will continue through online workshops in the 2024-2025 school year. Participants may want to review lectures 1-10 prior to joining, although presentations will summarize and extend material in a way that should be accessible to all. (Will continue in 2025 with lectures 12, 13, and 14)

230 C Contemplative Practice
History, Guilt & Habit, by Owen Barfield
Instructor: Stephen Sagarin
Barfield’s History, Guilt & Habit is an introduction to his thinking about history, evolution, and human consciousness, including those ingrained, largely unconscious habits of mind that we may change to healthfully improve our relationships with the world and others. (Will continue in 2025)

210 C Practical Work in a High School
Instructor: Heather Scott
Using Carlee Adamson’s (founder of Trauma Literacy) “fishbowl protocol,” participants will identify and address issues relevant to teaching, colleagueship, administration, parent relations, and similar topics. Past discussions have addressed such issues as curriculum changes to address DEIJAB concerns; the challenges and opportunities of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence; and increasing high school enrollment.

220 SM-A / 220 HA Curriculum courses (choose either Humanities or Math/Science):

Humanities: Drama teaching in a Waldorf high school: Balancing classics and contemporary curricula
Instructor: Beth Robbins
Senior play or school play? Competitive auditions or an inclusive cast? Choice of play, rehearsal, coaching, performance–we will examine the myriad decisions and considerations that go into high school drama production, and we will also talk about drama in high school literature curricula–history through drama, Shakespeare, and lots more. Beth Robbins brings the wisdom and skill of 20 years experience in Waldorf high school literature and drama teaching.

Math/Science: Waldorf high school science teaching: Why the World around You Isn’t as It Appears by Albert Linderman
Instructor: Noelle Frerichs
Albert Linderman’s book is an introduction into Owen Barfield’s insightful, philosophical, and rigorous look at what could be called “phenomenological” science (recognizing that the word “phenomenological” means many things to many persons). We will begin with the first two chapters and continue in future workshops. Conversations will connect Barfield’s thought and Linderman’s text with the practice of teaching science and math in Waldorf high schools. (Will continue in 2025.)

Should you eventually enroll, the cost of your weekend attendance will be credited to your WHSTE tuition.
